Jokes aside this rose was one we bought just to see what all the fuss was about. It has been one of the most outstanding roses in the garden this year mainly with respect to vigour. As for disease resistance it's clearly doing better than most of our HTs, but I'll wait a year or two yet to finally decide on that point.
As for the mutant watershoot I actually waited for it to grow a bit so we could take this piccy but theres plenty of other normal new shoots ( and I mean plenty) to take it's place so who cares!Anyone else got a weirdo rose piccy?

WOW! A very weird looking thing.
The condition is called 'fasciation'.
I have included an url that explains it a little.
You can do a web search for more info.
It is great to know that Henri does well up there-I know that Grimaldi does-overall the delbards seem to be a tough versatile bunch.

sandie

Here is a link that might be useful: fasciation

Yes it is certainly weird looking, and sprouting like mad.
I have never had any watershoots on my roses yet you see everyone of them were Standards till this season when I bought one bush type though I do have ramblers, carpet roses, mini, and climbers. Is it possible for Standards to get watershoots as I have never had any in all the years I have been growing roses or is that just luck. Plenty of watershoots on other plants though. Sorry I dont have any weirdo pics of roses..Cheers..MM.

Hi Misty
The watershoot in the piccy is actually from Henri Matisse not actually from the rootstock.I only broke it off because I new it would never outgrow this problem.
Your link was interesting Sandie.I've seen fasciation in a few of the plant types they mentioned (especially the delphiniums) but also in lots of other plants too. This rose of ours just took me by suprise.I can't even remember if any of our roses have had this before but if they did I'm sure it was not this pronounced.
Anyone else get these on there roses?
Just on the subject of Delbards, I'll definately want to try some others ..... not to mention a swag of new Teas',some floris', some shrubs, a few climbers.......I think I'll need a second mortgage for this years rose order.
Night all. Mr Thrip.

Very interesting, I have never observed that before in any plants.
You have to wonder if it occurred due to the fact that it was sprouting so fast. Sort of siamese rose.

Weird things happening in Queensland! :))

Actually I have seen Patterson's Curse growing beside the road, exhibiting this strange phenomenon. Now I know it's name thanks to Sandie.

As regards to watershoots - I thought that the growth that results from basal breaks and watershoots were the same thing. As standards get this new growth too, it would not be confined to just bush roses. However, I must admit that bush roses seem to get great long watershoots (many of which have just broken off in the wet and windy weather we have just experienced).

Help, can someone please explain?

As far as I know a watershoot and a basal break are the same thing. The extra long, vigorous basal breaks that occur on some roses usually result in a multiple flowerhead and are therefore called candelabras.

I just use the term watershoot to refer to any vigorous new basal shoots. Some people refer to shoots from understocks as suckers.

Must be the year for "Fasciation" - I've just dicovered it on a weigela and a gaura lindheimeri in my garden. Never seen it in the garden before!
