We've had another cool summer. Not as bad as last year when I got maybe a dozen tomatoes (except for sungolds which produced fine) Everything I'm growing is doing fine, but we're not going to have a ton of tomato sauce for the freezer as we've had in the past. I'm still getting a couple of zuks/crooknecks and cukes per week. Not a ton, but just enough to not be overloaded, and enough to do some dehydrating/freezing. The little japanese eggplant are perfect coming in at about 2 per week, just enough for grilling. Peppers are slow but plentiful. MANY jalepenos! Not sure what to do with all those hot puppies! Artichokes are still coming in at about 2 every 2 weeks.We still have til the end of October for our summer stuff! Getting ready to plant broccoli, lettuce, radishes, greens, etc. It's hard to get the winter stuff going when the summer stuff keeps going through October! I have to sacrifice something to do a much smaller winter bed. I think it'll be the green beans, which look like they're almost done in. Nancy

I too am in Ohio, put my peppers out on those same days and have had similar problems with some of the plants. This is the cause in my case. 1) The peppers dry out, wilt a bit, and this causes sunscald. No wilting = no sun scald. I've had it happen in windowsills and outdoors. 2) Light to moderate wind whipping the plants back and forth causes damage just below the soil line. The stem dies in that spot and the plant slowly declines. If you move a bit of the soil and you should see a brown shrunken area of stem, with maybe a bulge above it where new roots want to sprout. You can cut the stem off below this and stick it down in the soil and hope roots sprout in time to save the plant. I have no trouble with all day full sun this time of year as long as the pots are saturated with water when they go out and the plants are protected from wind. It is also helpful to have the plants on the grass rather than concrete because of higher humidity.

Roberta, it's a great image. I believe that they are the nymphs of a 'true bug' of some kind, but I don't know which. There are many stink bug types that infest that plant family. It would be most helpful if you could locate one of the adult insects....though it is likely to look so different from the nymph that you might not associate the two.

Oh Hobby....You should of see two winters ago!! I took sick for a week where my HUGE three feet tall Gardenia resided in a huge window which was amazing..Well, it so happens that that summer I broke my heel falling off a ladder doing roofing and I could not spray my plants like I would of with the F.E... I had no friends willing to offer besides no longer my friends.. Well, during the time of just that one week I was sick, I came back to work to be greeted with a huge gardenia that looked like it was sprayed with Halloween cob web which look like fog from a distance...Little did I expect to see those dam critter, mites having a huge party crawling over the place! Do you know that I had no choice but to lift that thing over my head to the dumpster in which all those mites just fell all over me! It was disgusting..I had to strip naked when I got home outside in 30 degree weather and take a shower just to make sure I did not carry just one of those things into my house..I'm sure that one would of devastated my collection..I always had a fear of mites. always...That is why I am so careful to avoid them! I hate them..I watch all my plants all winter long looking for just one..I can usually tell when I have them, I am that good and know them that well..I can tell the damage a mile away....My 'Rosemary' Oil will always be in hand if I ever have any again.....They will never get a hold of my trees, ever... That is also the reason whey I stick them on my cold porch..No pest survives or forages in temps that cool, especially after spraying the leaves with mist, cool and a fan going...Not one bug ever..I would rather sacrifice extensive growth than deal with bugs..I almost threw away every plant I owned because It too much work to keep up..The spraying inside can be such a pain...My gardenia plants, spider mite magnets get sprayed every week no matter what, because they are kept warm inside or in my greenhouse..Don't need then attracting any for sure) Wow, you opened a can of worms with me, or should I say MITES..lol
