grevillea long john looking yellow

Can someone tell me what's wrong with my grevillea long john? I planted it last summer and it has almost doubled in size (about 6 ft tall) and has two flowers on it right now as we've had a very warm, dry winter. The problem is that the leaves are very yellow, except for at the very top, and dropping off on the lower branches of the plant. It gets about 2 gallons of water once a week on a drip system. I'm worried because I've lost a Banksia, a Protea 'pink ice' and a Leucodendron in that same spot of the garden. They all seemed to suddenly turn yellow and die after growing very well for 4-6 months.
My garden soil seems a bit inconsistent in different areas. This area seems more sandy than others so could it be simply a lack of water or could there be something deep in the soil that is killing these plants once the roots get deep enough?

Yeah not looking too good Pal, Aussie natives, and I reckon even South Africans, (leucadendrons) can be difficult outside of their native habitat. Having said that both of those like similar conditions; neutral to slightly acidic soil, excellent drainage, and they hate root disturbance. In fact you can easily over care for them - both are very tolerant of dry conditions. Many also are not happy in humid conditions. Lime, by the way, will yellow the leaves and eventually kill them so I reckon the first thing Id do is check the ph. in the soil. Oh, and if you feed them use only fertilisers suitable for Aussie natives, and use it sparingly.

The main thing with fertilisers for these is that it must be very low in phosphorus.

I spread branches. I've seen old books where there were illustrations of plum branches pulled well below vertical in a method called festooning- sometimes I use this method to speed bearing. Generally I just spread them a bit above horizontal and remove oversized branches entirely. Maybe you should try festooning the LJ. By oversized I mean branches more than half the diameter of the trunk where they are attached to the trunk. Proportionately larger diametered scaffolds remain vegetative for a longer period as a general rule. Of course there are times when such branches are all you have to work with. Cutting to an outside bud is OK for peaches but delays bearing in Euro plums. Much better to cut back to a small branch if cutting is necessary at all. Otherwise you create a vegetative response that delays fruiting. Never heard of GF-8-1. Myro is vigorous and slow to bear and probably what the Cummins plum came on.

I love mine - its an old one from Jackson Perkins. It looks rough right now, we just survived "Snowmageddon" where temps got to 3. It was horribly cold all week. It is still alive - a big bush - and I am waiting to see what other tiny leaves come out on it before I start pruning it. Smells divine and has been a hardy rose for me. I may get another one just it case. One of my favorite whites.

Grevillea Experiment : high P fertilisers

As I have tried to make clear previously, I don't dispute that high P levels are relatively more toxic to Proteaceae than to other plant families, but I do believe that many rainforest grevilleas are less susceptible than WA species. Again its a relative thing, and I have certainly found one that isn't. A landscape supplier dumped a truckload of potting mix in my garden, close to some trees but about 6 metres from a G. baileyana. Some months afterwards it died, and on digging up the mix it was full of proteoid roots! Retrospectively, I have realised I have had a much higher proteaceae failure rate since using that mix, so I must find out what's in it. The seller told me it was fine for natives - you'd think that at my age I'd know better than to trust a salesperson, but my problem is I can remember back when most of them were trustworthy. Tony

John F Kennedy looked great but it just never flowered for me. When it did, it had a lot of trouble opening. The repeat was horrible and also very powdery mildew prone. When it was at its best the blooms were huge, lasted forever and had an almost sparkling white color. Lots of substance to their petals and the stems were very long and thick. Pope John Paul II however is a bloom machine and I get beautiful blooms continually. Never had a problem with the blooms not opening up yet. My only complaint is that often the blooms are so heavy that the thin stems can't hold them up straight.

Same thing happened with my Grevillea Superb. I talked to my neighbor who is a plant expert volunteer at the university arboretum. She gave me some Iron Chelate 10% powder. I gave it some of this Iron Chelate mixed in a water pail, and sure enough within a couple weeks the leaves turned nice and green! No more yellow leaves. I am using "Grow More Organic Based Iron Chelate" which is available at Amazon.com. It made a huge difference.

2 gallons of water a week is a bit more than it needs to. Try cutting back to a gallon per week. The iron chelate idea is great but a weak mix of sulphate of potash will help as well.
Avoid pouring over foilage, pour into soil around root ball, a teaspoon in 2 litres of water, stir well.

I planted mine last October in the Sacramento area in clay soil, late afternoon shade, and with some supplemental irrigation. In April it's blooming very well - a hummingbird has claimed it. If other plants in the same area have failed in the past, recommend the scientific approach - test the soil for PH and fertility, find out what the plant needs, then replant in better conditions.
