Calling NZ gardeners..and garlic

I've just joined GW, which was more complicated than expected!

(By the way, for "zip code" it's 0+ your NZ postal code).

I've been "lurking" on US forums, but their climate(s) and seasons are obviously pretty different.

The Aussie forums would have similar issues.

The NZ forum is...quiet.. do you trawl old US posts for relevant info? Maybe posts from Tasmania...

Anyway. I live in Wellington, and last year I planted garlic on the shortest day etc etc. It went well, but I want more, bigger, sooner. Has anyone planted in early/mid May? Have you found it better/worse/same?

While I'm at it, does anyone overwinter their peppers/chillies? I'm used to starting again each season, but am starting to think I'm chucking out perfectly good perennials. They have to be moved; I was thinking I could pot them and replant late spring/summer. Have I been reading too many US forums? Space is at a premium, so stashing them away from the garden means more brassicas as much as anything!

Thanks, looking forward to hearing from other NZ gardeners. Otherwise I'll just have to hang out with the Americans and add 6 months to everything!

10a sounds more like Waikanae than Wellington.

You can over-winter peppers. I've done that with the small ornamentals and been successful but they wither at the whiff of a cool night. Serious heat-lovers - along with tomatoes.

Garlic: I'm not sure about more, bigger, sooner. There are those baggies of very white coated garlic they bring in from China. The Warehouse has seed garlic, though I've only seen it, not grown it. And, if you have friends in Blenheim area - lots of garlic grown there - and harvested in February. (In time for wine festivals, ripening figs, and other decadences...)

Some of my garlic clumps stay in the ground all year to keep the roses company. Every so often they flower. I suspect that soil type and aspect probably has a lot to do with size and speed. A sandy-ish soil with added humus more than recent compost might be part of the answer.

With the peppers - I think that this year I'll go for biggish containers and all the sun I can get, plus protection to hurry them along. By the time they consider flowering and fruiting, if I plant at Labour Weekend, it's nearly time to close down for winter! I don't enjoy the sort of Mediterranean climate that they seem to thrive in.

Some of the GW sites are friendly and welcoming - Rocky Mountains and Bulbs, for example. And the frugal gardening people who were all wekas in a past life, I'm sure.

Particular people are well worth heeding - calistoga, who is great on container gardening and general things, lindac, pnwgal48 who gardens on a pocket handkerchief and works as a horticulturalist - really knows her plants and growing conditions, donnabaskets for bulbs - and chemocurl, mr subjunctive for house plants. They are all kind and usually courteous to newbies.

Fun places to be include Name That Plant! where people from anywhere and all over post their pictures of plants they can't name - common and not-known-in-NZ. And the Weeds... there are some nightmares I hope we never see here. Kudzu grass. Eek!

The UK site is also useful. And the Pacific North West - Washington State and Oregon - are most like us, as well as coastal British Columbia in Canada. The Californians are pleased to say how their 9 zones are nothing like ours - and I agree. Worse than Central Otago in mid summer. (So's the mid west. As bad as Aus with temps into the late thirties and early forties.)

Deepest apologies - it's 'gardengal48' and she's in the Pacific Northwest.

And - just as you did here - start your own thread rather than piggy-backing on someone else's question. If you do - you're more likely to be answered.

And don't worry about being a Kiwi asking six months out. Mostly you'll get an answer.

BTW - checking out the South African Plants site can be useful, too. And they're in the same hemisphere.

What fun to see all your vegetable gardens. Vegetables can be really quite beautiful. I really like the idea of growing our own and the whole organic thing. My story begins with a vegetable garden that my son grew and tended until he graduated from high school. I really was much more interested in flowers, but I took it over. I hated it. The weeds were hard to control and the edge hard to keep neat. After a few years I finally decided to embrace it. I analyzed why I didn't like veggie gardening and decided that if it was pretty and less labor intensive that it might appeal to me more. So I created a Potager. Just the name sounded interesting to me. I lined the whole garden with old bricks and made it symmetrical with a large urn for a centerpiece. I later added the arbor. I began to look for unusual vegetables and now like to try new things each year. I have also added flowers and herbs. In fact one of the quadrants is a small cutting garden. Since its just hubby and I, we don't really need such a large one. Here are a few pictures of my Potager. This first one is early spring and showes the bones of the garden. Basically a rectangle with a semi-circle on each end. The back end holds the asparagus patch.

What Ian said... Despite rumours otherwise, NZ is quite dry in summer- my folks live on the West Coast of the South Island (no fancy-shmancy names for us..) and ran out of water this summer. We've seen some pretty severe droughts in the last few years. Historically the West sides of the islands have been significantly wetter, capturing rain and leaving the East dry, but since we seem to be getting 'hundred year' droughts and floods every couple of years. Damn Climate Change. Anyway, despite our small landmass, NZ's soo long and thin it goes from sub-tropical up North, with some (NZ style) desert in the middle to sub-antarctic down South. A lot of natives succumb to phytopthera if too wet, even the tree ferns and other 'tropical' looking plants. Like Ian, i highly recommend hebes- they are TOUGH- I don't know what your access to NZ plants is like, but if they have the 'wiri' cultivars, they are really stunning. Astelia is one of my favourites. Very hardy, dramatic pale green and silver spear-shaped leaves. Astelia fragrans...need i say more? How about the Caprosma and muehlenbeckia families. Maybe a bit of an aquired taste; divarcating, very 'architectural'. I love em! I think heat and dry would't be a problem. Months of freezing...not so sure. Of course alpine plants would cope, as it's blimmin boiling up those mountains in summer!

I need to read the $64 tomato. I swear setting up my garden (and fence) I have felt like I was just bleeding money left and right. It will be nice to have it start to pay me back. With any luck, in a couple of years the initial outlay of beds/soil/trellises/fence will be paid for and then my only recurring expenses will be seeds, amendments, and water. At that point my garden should turn a corner and actually become profitable instead of a money sink. I am already thinking ahead to all the bleberries, blackberries, raspberries, grapes, and tomatoes we will have this year, and all of the peaches, plums, pears, and apples we will have in future years. That's big bucks grown on my little .2 acre garden plot folks! Here are my numbers so far from the site Leslie linked. Organic Lettuces $4-$6 per gallon bag. This is not very big and is about 1/2 pound Strawberries $5 per quart Spinach $5-$5.50 per half pound = $10-$11 per lb (that is INSANE)! Choi Choi the closest thing I could find to Pac Choi is $4.50 per lb Herbs vary and I am still going with $10 per month. It's probably more, possibly much more. After digging further into OK co-op prices and firming up my spreadsheet, my one month total (from Early april to present/early may) is more like $142! I am over the moon! Jo

Hi all I have just joined this forum and hope to get some advice from all you good gardeners. I have been trying to grow a good size garlic for ages. The very first time, maybe 10 years go, I just bought a $ 1 bag of chinese garlic, put it in between my roses and I had the harvest of my life. Since than, I progressed to a garlic garden bed which i circulate every year, but the heads are getting smaller and smaller. I must mention that after the first year, I never again bought the chinese garlic,( due to being educated about organic gardening ) but ordered by Digger's, got some at farmers markets, etc. Last year, we moved up to Olinda, Melbourne, where we have a rich, chocolate but acidic soil and again, my garlic was a huge dissapointment. I did prepare the bed with blood and bone, cow manure and mulched the garlic. Mind you, we had so much rain this year that our 125 thousand litres tank was already overflowing in July. So maybe , the garlic just got too much water? I did not fertilize at all. I usually make my own fertilizer from blood and bone, cow manure and comfrey, which grows a lot on our property, add lots of water and keep it in a drum.Should I fertilize with this? So now the garlic planting time is here again, do you think that I should add some lime to the soil and John, where can get the good varieties? Many thanks for any answers Poshka
