He is just starting to shine he has just thrown out long canes this spring which I have begun to twine on the vergola, which is a cross between a verandah and a pergola lol otherwise he is very, very healthy and seems to love my hot humid climate. Will love to see him next year, I just may have a lot of work on my hands containing him in the near future.

Looks like a great rose, I can't see any thorns, and lovely vigorous growth with no sign of black spot.When you say hot humid climate are you talking Qld, and if so are they readily available at nurseries.

Hi, he does have thorns but not many, so makes him easy to manage, I live in Coffs Harbour, I reckon he would love any hot climate, not sure how he would go in a cold climate, Id say he just wouldnt get as big. No havent seen any blackspot on him at all and scale doesnt seem an issue either, unlike some roses.

The 'Lamarque' I know is always double. There is, however, a presumed 'Lamarque' in the Sacramento City Cemetery. It's one of the cemetery's "legacy" roses, so only God knows how long it has been there. Maintenance people keep it chopped way way back, which may be why (Fred Boutin tells me) it sometimes blooms as a single. The blooms I saw were fully double . . . I wonder if there is a slight genetic shift allowing the single blooms, or if it is immaturity or stress. Here is the Sacramento City Cemetery's "Like-Lamarque":

MAC vs Lamarque

My three MACs are grown as very tall (25 ft +) climbers, and I love them. If they get mildew I cannot tell - I have never seen any on them. My Lamarque does get mildew. Right now I am trying to convince L that it should climb up a nearby tree, but it is determined to put out long canes for 360 degrees around, and wants to be a giant mound about 15feet across. I can't let it do that, and we (I and L) are arguing about that - we will see who wins. I believe MAC can be kept way shorter than mine are, and recommend it strongly. Above is a pic of my youngest one - not large enough yet, but contemplating joining its elder in eating the old garage. (OOPS - pic got in the wrong place - that is MAC) Jackie

Carol, thank you! Yes, time is such an unexpectedly big factor in gardening. It's one of the many things growing roses has taught me. It's been a really enriching journey these past four years (I remember when I got my first roses and posted here asking for advice. I knew NOTHING at all about growing things! So funny!). Another thing this plant in particular teaches me is just the patience and determination of dealing with its exuberant growth. It's like every two months it's a whole new puzzle to deal with, and at first I freaked out every time thinking "oh no! there isn't enough space! what am I going to do about this rose?? have i made a big mistake??", and now I just look at it, study it a bit, and then set about "managing" it. Tying it in one cane at a time, cutting it back, just calmly, patiently, having faith, not freaking out. I think it's probably like being a new parent really.... Ah the lessons one learns from the garden.... :) Jackie, that sounds glorious!!! You should post a photo! I want to see what a 70 year old Lamarque looks like! It's great when the neighbours' gardens contribute in a positive way..... Yes, mine is so full of buds too and not a malformed one in the bunch! Magic.

I bought a "Lamarque' from A.R.E. seven years ago and I grow it as a self supporting bush, of 6 feet tall by c. 4 feet wide. -I was disappointed when I received it because the foliage was not as spectacularly pretty as the leaves on a Lamarque' I had seen growing at Morcom Park A. of R. in Oakland. Ca. My 'Lamarque' has a nice scent (which includes a faint whiff of lemon flower and what one author calls "meadow") but it is a very light scent, I'd rate it as having , when conditions are at their very best only one f, out of ffff. Usually it is less than that, c. one half of an f. I collect Tea roses and have a few Noisettes and am blessed to have the olfactory receptacles needed to detect Tea rose scent. sigh, ever in search of a perfect rose. Lux.

I purchased most of my roses from specialist rose nurseries by phone, they are ordered late summer-autumn and arrive in the mail bare rooted in winter. Call early as sometimes stocks deplete quickly for the most popular roses, I have found these roses to be far healthier than store bought roses. Some nurseries will order them in for you if you request them as well.

Yes he is beautiful, I cannot wait till he gets bigger as this is the first year he has begun to spread his wings, though he hasnt been in the ground for all that long anyway, my Renae took longer to take off then Lamarque, I will be posting some more pics shortly of some other roses in my garden, havent been able to take many pics due to the amount of rain we have gotten here of late, the roses I hope to post pics of are Crepuscule, Dutchess de brabant-climbing sport, Sarah van fleet-rugosa rose, Mutabilis, veilchenblau, Carrabella, Buff beauty, Cornelia, and two unknowns that I will post to see if others may know what they are. I do have a few others but they are not showing very well as yet.
