First Cactus

| I bought it a few months ago for my daughter. Really she's not half as into is as I am.
First of all, I don't know what kind it is. It has a triangle shape dark green stem with a bright orange ball on the top, growing smaller balls all over it. I bought it at Wal-Mart, so I know it's pretty common. So if anyone can just tell me the name of it, that would be great.
I was told that the smaller balls can be cut and will grow they're own root. seems reasonable, a lot of plants do. So I cut the largest one off. Put it right in the dirt. Then I read that I should have let it dry just a little first, to help protect it from root rot. But it'll be ok, cuz I didn't water it right away and it has a however small bit of calus & I have high hopes.
I was going to get a couple more and start a cactus garden, but the season is over for wal mart, and any green house or other garden center is far away. Oh well, I got lots to take care of as it is. Well, hopefully all goes well for now. |

Hi Orangeblooms, I am new to this list but I noticed your message. The cactus you have, I believe is a coloured cultivar of Gymnocalycium mihanovichii. Most likely, it is grafted onto a Hylocereus stock. It will be unlikely to root and grow as it has no chlorophyl, so it will starve to death. That is the reason for grafting the plant, it feeds from the chlorophyl in the green stock. The only way you can propagate this plant is to graft it yourself. Wishing you growing success, Arachnean. |
