Can anyone tell me how I go about banana trees. When we bought the place, they were several on it, larger ones, medium ones and small shoots. Will they bear fruit??? When??? What should I do with or to them??? Have no idea!!!!

RE: Bananas

Hi Elfi Yes your Bananas should bear fruit, when I grew them in Townsville it took about 18monthts from a sucker that I planted (Lady Finger) to maturity it takes anything from just over three months to five months for the bunch of bananas to ripen the latter being because it was ripening over the winter months.

They love water and fertilizer and it is best to have only one sucker growing at the base of the big plant, so that it takes the place of that plant after producing when you cut it down, then suckers will grow again so you will have to cut them off but always leave the biggest one there so it will grow into the next fruiting one.

If you ever want to know what grows in Qld or how to grow it get on to the DPI Site at www.dpi.qld.au. The link below will give you some info about banana problems, not that you would have any I didnt but things do happen.

Thanks MM!!! If I understand it right, I have to cut down the plant after it's been bearing fruit (but how do I know if the bigger ones standing has not already had fruit on them and it's just been left standing by the former owener?). There is the medium size one beside it - I leave that one standing - and just cut off the smaller one besides it.
Thanks for the link to DPI.
Have a merry and blessed Xmas!!!!

RE: Bananas

You can usually tell look for a stalk that the bunch of bananas were growing on, also if there are fresh looking or new leaves the plant is probably still growing and has not produced any fruit. Yes that is right leave the med one and cut off any small ones.

Thank you elfi and a Merry Christmas to you and your Family too.

MM.
