Sydney - tree to 5metres maximum

I am trying to choose a tree for a courtyard downstairs and a deck upstairs. I live in a coastal area. Not too dense, graceful & weepy sounds good, maximum height 5m.A single trunk with spreading canopy, although it will be in a corner of the garage and shed. I would like it to canopy over the garage to block out the view of the neighbours. It would be in shade for the first 2 metres then sunny. Deciduous is ok by me (though the neighbours with pools may not agree) as the aspect is north east when it gets above the garage. I love the robinias but too large. Some suggestions have been: claret ash, weeping birch, gleditsia triacanthos, gordonia lasianthus. The books seem to differ on the heights - any suggestions or comments??

RE: Sydney - tree to 5metres maximum

Hi Kelly
May I suggest a China Doll or Radermachera Sinica. These are very easy to find and Bunnings / Kmart garden centres will have these. They can grow quite tall, however I suggest cutting off the lower branches to get it going and then the apex once it has reached your desired height. It will then branch out with a wonderful canopy. I have used this very successfully as a screening plant from my neighbour in Sydney. After 5 years, mine has just started to flower with white trumpet-like flowers. Good luck. I can send you pictures if you wish.

Dear SouthernHighlands
Thanks so much for answering me! My apologies for the delay but my computer has been playing up. I would love a picture if you could manage it. Is it the same as an Asian Bell tree? We had one of those in the old house and it was so tall!
