Small deciduous tree for seaside

Posted by Jayne_Seaside_Vic (My Page) on

Hi, I am looking for a small deciduous tree for the north side of my house. I am an hour from Melbourne on the coast. Even though I am 500 m. from the sea front, I get a small amount of salt spray and east and west winds. I would appreciate any ideas. I have checked out the other trees in the neighbourhood and most are evergreen. Thanks, Jayne

Why dont you just take a list to your Local Nursery and ask if the salt winds will effect them.
So many pretty trees are deciduous, When I lives down south I grew a Crab apple they are not very tall, a Silver Birch, Golden Elm and Ash, Claret Ash, Weeping cherry, Pink stellata Magnolia, Prunus and a Maple there is always fruit trees as well, apart from the Elm and the Ash most are under 6mts I think.

Hope this helps a little ......MM.

Thanks for the suggestions MM. I have been to the local nursery and they said white cedar or ash which grow quite big. I have been trying to find out which is the smallest growing ash. I did orginally put in a dogwood which is still alive but the leaves are half brown. I don't know if the leaves will toughen up if the dogwood matures. I am also considering a Manchurian Pear. Have you considered a crepe myrtle? I'm not sure if it's too cold where you are but they grow well on the coast at Nowra NSW. There are better forms of Pyrus available now than the Manchurian pear. Check out the Flemings tree site

I have the same problem in Perth. I am looking for a small deciduous tree to put in the middle of our lawn. I haven't had too much success, but perhaps I am being too fussy.
