 o
which creeper is best?

Posted by Lisa44 Sydney AUST (My Page) on

I want a fast growing creeper to train about a metre and a half above the fence line. It is between 2 houses so gets some direct sun in the middle of the day in summer but otherwise mostly shady. I am thinking of either Potato Vine or Hardenbergia. I'm not sure which would be the fastest or whether the Potato Vine would cope with not too much sun. Any other suggestions gratefully received - I really need to block out those neighbours!

Potato vine,
do you mean Faradaya splendida? this would grow very well.

Kris, I think Lisa might mean Solanum jasminoides - Attractive, shrubby twining climber gives an almost perpetual display of showy blue-tinged white blossoms. Good ornamental cover for fences or walls, or growing across lattice for shade. Semi-evergreen. Full to partial sun. Fast grower, stems to 20 to 25 feet long. Cutting grown.

Lisa might have a bit of difficulty getting a Faradaya splendida in Sydney, let alone growing it. It is for tropical and sub-tropical climates.

Hi Lisa 44 & Wombat,
My sister had a potato vine growing in Melbourne and it did very well over a pergola. I was surprised when she took it out. I haven't had much luckk with it but my other pandorea and star jasmine do well here in CQ while that Princess Di has never flowered once and it's been in 8 years. Jan

I've only had a couple of flowers this year from Lady Di and I've had it a while too. Solanum jasminoides may be what I need-something fast for a fence to protect my roses and other plants from the wind, if I can find any.
