Looking to buy Frangipani (Plumeria) cuttings, seeds...

Hello, does anyone is Australia have exotic frangipani cuttings, plants or seeds they can sell me. I live in San Antonio, Texas USA and noone carries the Australian varieties like Mermais Gem, Apriocot, fruit salad, etc... If you have your own personal plumerias in Australin, maybe you could consider opening an mail order or on line nursery. The demand here in US is very high for your variety of plumerias. Please contact me and let me know if you or anyone you know in the Australia area can sell me some. Also, do you know if there is a purple flower plumeria in Australia, if so, what is the variety and how can I get one? Thanks so much, Erika

Wouldn't you have to pay for customs clearance/quarantine restrictions?

Hello Marie; hum...I really don;t know. This is the first time I am trying to get something mailed from Australia. I suppose it may have to go through customs. But I don't know what all that entails and how much it would cost. It doesn't really matter, I will pay the customs fee or whatever fees are imposed. I should say as long as the fees are not extremly outrageous. Any ideas? Thanks Marie! Erika

I think I've read somewhere that to get live plants shipped to the US you need a phytosanitation certificate or something like that, to show the plants are free from disease. Your US customs office should be able to tell you. That would be pretty hard for a home grower to get, so you might be better off contacting a commercial nursery that sells plumeria?

Couldn't they be sent directly through the mail without going through customs. How will they know what is being sent? Do they open the package before sending. Seems like it could be sent like ordinary mail, couldn;t it? And if they found out it was a "plant" I could play ignorant. What do you think?

The frangipani farm is closed

RE: Looking to buy Frangipani (Plumeria) cuttings, seed

Unfortunately that WAS the only place offering Australian cuttings and I had contacted Bontaic Treasures to buy some and found out the people from the "Australian Farm" acammed him out of LOTS of money and never sent the plumeiras he paid for....so, no more Australina plumerias. That's why I though I could find someone through the garden forum to sell me some directly. Oh well....the search continues. Thanks! Erika

Yes they could be sent by ordinary mail but would still require a phytosanitary certificate.

I don't think you'd find that ignorance would be accepted as an excuse if you were caught trying to smuggle uncertified plants through the mail however.

It is only in the last year that USA have enforced the phytosanitary certificate requirments. If a large box of Plumeria stems from healthy plants got checked and approved it would not be that expensive . The postage is the killer , it would be over $100 for a box . The best time to send would be our autumn , just as they are losing the foliage . What types are you after ? Not 'Cooktown Sunset' ?

Erika, you need to take seriously the import requirements for phytosanitary ceritificates. I just read in the Canadian exchange forum of a gardener who was fined (I think it was $300 US) for mailing plant matter into the USA without certification. Plus, Erika, your own state of Texas works hard to protect its agriculture, natural lands, and waterways. Search the Ponds forum of GW and you will find a note from a man who was fined $1000 US for sending water hyacinth into your very city! (You are from San Antonio, right?)

Cost of a phyto certificate is approx $175 AUD then there is postage on top plus the cost of the cuttings .. would NOT be worth shipping for just a few cuttings.

Erica, The Frangipani Farm Byron Bay is under new ownership and has no affiliation with the previous owners who dealt dishonestly with Botanic Treasures U.S. The cuttings you speak of were not sold to us as part of the stock on the farm and are in the possession of the previous owners. Fortunately these people did not stay in business. I hope this clears up that comment.

Seems a high price to pay for the phytosanitary certificate ... Out of Thailand we pay US$10.00
