Help for Camellia's

My neighbour was given two camellias, a couple of months ago which she planted into a raised garden bed, both had a couple of buds on them, I looked after her garden for three weeks while she went on holiday and I noticed that those buds didn't open.

Yesterday she asked me to look at them as the buds are now going brown, and asked for my help, I dont know much about them as I only have a few sasanqua, hers are probably those too but the buds are bigger than mine were, mine finished flowering weeks ago.

Could it be lack of water, as she does not water often, where I watered her garden once a week when she was away, and I was shocked at how dry it was, would it be possible that I overwatered it, they are planted in very loose soil, which dries out fast, looking forward to some help.

I don't think you could have overwatered the camellia. I bought a couple of camellias from a supermarket and realised too late that the change in atmosphere probably caused all the buds to drop off. Now I repot any bought camellias because usually they are not in good potting mix. I try to add saturaid to help with keeping moisture around the roots and add some leaf mulch to the bottom of the pot or hole and around the base after planting out. If the plant has been stressed with lack of water it will drop its buds. I'm in Melbourne and some of my Japonica camellias recently dropped their buds because of the decent rain. They were half opened and then balled before falling off.

I think there are probably a range of factors which can contribute to the bud drop. Sometimes growers will reduce the buds deliberately to get bigger flowers. I'd bet it was probably the drying out prior to your taking over. Good luck.
