Will possum collars kee cats out of trees?

We're about to renovate a house and hope to keep the cats safely inside a few courtyard garden areas. In order for this to work, we need to make sure the courtyard plantings won't allow the cats to climb their way out. However there is already a big jacarandah in place. The architect has suggested possum collars on this and other planned plantings. Can anyone let me know whether these are likely to be effective against escape artist Burmese cats? They already have a rolls royce cat cage system, but it's just not enough for them. Thanks for any help.

How high a determined/motivated moggie can jump is probably a guess. 5 or 6 feet would be no trouble and with a bit of a run-up and something to grip??? It depends I suppose on how high the first branchings are and it would be a pity to prune as jacarandas are so much nicer left to grow in their natural shape. It would also be a bit unsightly to have to band the tree though I guess you can get a sort of colourbond solution to everything.
If you were really concerned, you might just have to add a "stretch hummer" to the rolls royce and extend the cage into the tree or round the permimeter of your yard(I saw some brilliant ones on TV but of course it all comes at a cost.
