Bird of Paradise - Strelitzia alba

Hi,
I have had to take off some offshoots of the humongous Bird of Paradise (tree) because it threatened to push over our fence. I didn't realise that it would grow quite so large or wide. It is finally flowering after 7 years. I didn't think that it was supposed to do that in June, either.
Anyway, I was wondering if there was anyway to save the offshoots as it is now pretty cold and absolutely the wrong time of year to do this.
Any ideas?

Yes all the BOP's have terrific root systems, that's why you have to be careful where planting as they can be an effort to dig out. The white one can be equal to something likt a traveller's palm in ability to shift walls. I'd be inclined to put your offsets in a fairly sandy mix, not too peaty and not too wet, just a little moist, & try to find somewhere really warm of a day you can leave them - like up again a brick wall on a paved area. But at night to perhaps cover the leaves and bring inside - garage, laundry, where it won;t get frosts. |
