Gee Wombat - my camellia's current position sounds like the luxury suite at the Hilton compared to what yours is going through! I hope they're as hardy as you say! I still think mine is exposed to too much sun - I only moved it about 6 ft along the same bed (Western boundary, South side of house), but whereas before it used to get shade in the afternoon from the shadow of the house next door, it now gets full on sun all day as it faces the "garden" of the house next door and not the wall. (They don't actually have a garden - a paved, sparse Tuscan looking thing with geometrically trimmed box hedges - not a flower in sight - pretty silly in a period workers cottage). Do you think there's a remote chance it will get used to it's full on sun sport (being a japonica) or should I just bite the bullet and move it (to the Eastern edge of the house where it will get morning sun for a few hours, but shade in the afernoon from our house wall)? Ah, what we we do without our garden to fret over methinks!

Gee, you ask difficult questions. I guess whether or not it's going to take full sun is going to depend on variables such as variety, soil, etc. In Sydney you see very old camellias that have grown into trees and waving around up there totally exposed to sun, wind, etc. They don't seem to mind - I guess they have their roots in the right mix.

I suppose the answer is how much time have you got? I wouldn't plant a camellia in full sun (I gave up planting for posterity after I moved from my last house and the new owners pulled almost everything out and replaced with every known kitchy garden artifact they could find - at least your neighbours seem to have stuck to one style) and I also have heavy frost to contend with. Both tend to burn the flowers.

I think I'd think short-term and move it. But if you do decide to leave it where it is, provide Hilton standard room-service.

Yep I will start digging a new bed for it this weekend and go and get all the necessary accoutrements, that you suggested, from the nursery. I hope this 5-star room service and a personal butler (me) to wait on it hand and foot so that it does not become too stressed will do the trick! I will let you know in due course how it all went!!
