pepperina trees

We have 2 pepperinas, one is enormous, and is covered in the red pepper berries after flowering. The smaller one at the western side flowers as often but never gets the berries. Are they a different type? Also when should we prune the smaller one as it's a bit sparse at the moment.

Maybe they are male and female trees We had carob trees at are last home they both flowered but only one had carob beans Just an idea! Dianne
