Eucalyptus Globulus and Aphids

| I'm growing Globulus in Cornwall, South-West England. I have got some that have survived 2 winters now (min.temperatures -3C). In mid-summer however the new growth is being attacked by a bluey/white substance which I presume are Aphids. I can get rid of them by spraying every 2 weeks during the summer and autumn but they seem to have the effect of weakining the trees just before winter and the trees then struggle to survive the cold weather.
Do Globulus suffer from the same problem in Australia or NZ? Are there any solutions other than using insecticides?
Thanks. |

Good question, no one is growing globulus as a garden plant here! Do you know how big it gets and how bad its roots are? I presume it is attacked by aphids, among many other pests that do not occur in the UK, but I guess that the native predators keep aphids in check in Australia. |

| Thanks Bernard. I haven't planted the Globulus in my garden. I have a 2 acre field in which I'm experimenting with different varieties of Eucalyptus. It appears that these whiteflies are not a problem in Aust/NZ and are apparently controlled by native predators. Looks like chemical control is my best bet! |

sallyann, Two books you might consider borrowing/reading: For botanist/historian inclined readers "Citizen Labillardiere: A Naturalist's Life in Revolution and Exploration (1755-1834)" Duyker, A. Pub Melb Uni.Press. Labill. was the French Botanist who discovered for science and named E.globulus. It is the floral emblem of Tasmania and Labill. is in the scientific name of two other of our State floral emblems. The other is just a very good Oz culture book: "Eucalyptus" Bail, Murray ... Text Publishing. |
