Lilac not growing

Posted by mistyhill Ranges NSW Aust (My Page) on Thu, May 20, 04 at 7:36
Last spring I purchased two grafted lilac bushes. They have sat all summer without growing at all. The leaves shrivelled brown on the edges but stayed on the bush. Both bushes have had plenty of bright green buds for months and appears healthy but has no new leaves.
I have fairly acidic soil although I added lime when I planted them. Any ideas! |

| Hi, Some plants take a couple of years to establish themselves, so it is early days yet, the brown edged leaves could have been lack of water during the Summer MM |

| Dear Mistyhill, from experience, lilacs will noy grow at alll in acidic soil.Even though you have added lime to the soil this may not have been enough to sufficiently lower the ph. I added mushroom compost, which is highly alkaline, to the acidic soil in which Ihad planted some lilacs. They powered away in the first season. However in another part of the garden I have planted Lilacs into the acidic soil and in 5 years they haven't moved. Both sets of lilacs have had full sun , adequate water and reasonable drainage. The brown leaves may also indicate acid burn from the soil. |

| Dear Kenznik, thanks for the advice, I have added quite a lot of lime but perhaps it hasn't had a chance to work yet. I'll try some mushroom compost as well. |
