Magnolia planting & root spread

| To all those expert Magnolia growers, I would appreciate some advice as to the expected root spread on Magnolia denudata, Magnolia Vulcan & Magnolia Phillip Tregunna. I understand that the later grows to 5 metres in 10 years.
Of these three, which ones would do well with full sun?
Thanks for the advice, Shirley |

| Most hardwood trees, open grown, that is, given a chance without competition, will grow a root ball diameter about equal to the crown diameter. Know the mature tree statistics and plan ahead, or monitor the growth and root prune or remove the tree after it has reached the tolerable size limit. Try the USDA Fire link for Magnolia statistics. |

| Thanks Mak I intend to give them room but as you say it may be the axe when problems occur. I assume most are surface rooted to their crown diameter. It is sometimes hard to visualise the mature tree and its impact on other surrounding shrubs. I must go scouting our local area and see some of the mature plants when in flower. |
