 o
cherry laurel, where to get it??

Posted by hillybilly NSW Aust (My Page) on

I am intending to plant a cherry laurel hedge, but initial serches have only turned up advanced stock. Does anyone know of any mail-order nurseries who supply tube stock or larger. Or of any nurseries in the New England who stock them??????

I have found this a problem myself - not just with cherry laurel, but with most hedge plants and conifers and bluegums (of all things). Nurseries obviously make more money from advanced plants. I found a tiny nursery whose owner was willing to do a deal with me. In the end my hedging plants were $1.30 each. Talk to the owner and see if you can't make a deal.

They are quite easy to grow from cuttings and, with decent soil and regular watering, will grow quite quickly.

Perhaps you can locate a mature shrub with a friendly owner. Otherwise, consider buying one or two plants and raising cuttings from them.

If any of you need seeds of the cherry laurel, I have some, just harvested. Small shrub was planted by a professional nurseryman, and he said that is what it was. I have looked on the web sites, and it looks like it. My 3 are in the shade, and have been there over 20 yrs., and a little over 3 ft. tall. I prune just a little after blooming. Just need a sase.

Darlene, I would expect your 20 year old Cherry Laurels to be somewhat taller than 3 feet, even allowing for shade and light pruning. The leaves are about 6" (150mm) long.

Perhaps there is a miniature version.

The currawongs eat all the fruit off mine. They are just developing flowering trusses.

Yes, Darlene, I would expect that after 20 years your cherry laurel to be a tree!!!! Could be a Hebe?????

Another member actually DUG up a heap of seedlings and sent them to me and they are now in place. Doing very well, so a HUGE thankyou to him.

Cherry laurels can become a serious environmental weed of bushland, spread far and wide by birds eating the fruit. Please think twice before planting such species and perhaps consult your environment dept to avoid unsuitable plants.

I've grown Cherry Laurels for years. I get lots of plants seeding in my garden (including kurrajongs and peppercorn trees, both of which I guess came in via the wood heap) but never the Cherry Laurels. I've had to grow extras from cuttings.

A plant may be an environmental hazard in one locality, but not necessarily in another.
