Dysfunctional bougainvillea

| I've had a variegated bougainvillea in a terracotta pot for approximately 4 years now and it is still only a few sticks with sparse, tiny leaves. The longest branch is around 15cms. I’ve watered, I’ve not watered, I’ve fed, I’ve neglected, I’ve repotted, I’ve even pleaded with the thing and it just won’t respond. I don’t know the variety. It may be a miniature, but even then, it’s still not doing what I think it should (growing leaves, growing bigger). It once had one lovely deep pink flower. The pot is placed in full Melbourne sun for most of the day, next to a brick wall. Is there something I should be doing (apart from admitting defeat and throwing it out)? I could plant it into the garden bed but that receives much less sun in this narrow, inner-city back yard. Any advice? |

| Hi Julie you are doing all the right things, just keep it a little on the dry side full sun, but remember pot grown ones do have to be watered more, do you prune it, as the more you prune the bushier it will get even if you only take say 2cms off it. Give it a feed of slow release fertlizer after you prune it that helps to make more growth, dont do it at any other time and try and make growth even if you dont get flowers, just to get it bigger a bit late in the season now for down south even though you are still getting real hot days now and again, if it does not make much growth by next Summer yes then I would put it in the Garden and see if it does better, if not well then its up to you. Good luck whatever you decide. Cheers MM. |
