Cooking Apple variety for Canberra climate

Hello,

My sister lives in Canberra and is not too computer savvy. She is about to start a small orchard (15-20 trees) and told me that she has a problem finding an apple variety that is ideal for cooking ; like the Bramleys we had growing up in Ireland.

A few questions: What is the Climate Zone for Canberra re: chilling hours? Is there an Australian apple that is very tart like the Bramley?

She wants to grow some semi-dwarf and miniature columnar varietes only.

Many thanks.

John

Lyonsy, I think your skin blister should talk to the local nurseries. They grow apples at Piallago (near the Canberra airport) and there are also a few nurseries there. Some of their people might be the full bottle.

Why can't you grow Bramleys in Canberra? I shouldn't think the climate was all that unsuitable. I'd certainly give them a try. When we had an exceptionally long, hot summer here several years ago, our Bramleys thrived - and more exciting still, some of them became sweet enough to eat out of hand. Alas, it hasn't happened since......

Good old Aussie Granny Smiths (expecially if you add a bit of lemon juice) aren't bad.
