Crabapples in Perth?

Does anyone know where I can get a crabapple tree in Perth? I will go through the yellow pages and do a ring around - but I thought I might save time by this post...

Thanks

Aggie

Nah, I don't think they do well here, winters are too warm.

They grow well enough in the hills. Melville Nurseries have a gorgeous archway of them. I would suspect someone like Wondawest Nurseries stock them. He stocks just about every other fruit tree. I tried Malus 'Gorgeous' which is more for fruit pickling rather than beauty and only ever got 8 little apples and yes I forced myself to pickle those 8. I live near Freo. If you live in the hills and want to to give that a go send me an email and it's yours. It's been in a big bag for 3 years waiting for someone to love it.

Rose - I live near Burswood - probably not close to the Hills enough. I have seen the archway in Melville Nurseries - absolutely gorgeous. Plus the GardenGurus featured this absolutely stunning flowering cherry a month or so ago ... I was thinking maybe I could have a crab apple out the front.

We are actually in need of a small deciduous tree. I didn't want to plant a chinese tallow. The position is probably too sunny and windy for a japanese maple - south west exposure + northern aspect.

I'm amazed your malus has survived 3 yrs in a bag - you must have been loving it fairly well for it to be still alive. I suspect Lathlain is too flat and I regret to say that I don't think my front yard will be a good home for it. But thank you for your offer.

I haven't been to Wondawest. The other place I was going to try was Floraland.

Thanks for your responses.

Let me know how you go at Floraland as I haven't heard of them. I'd call Wondawest first as it seems so far away. There used to be a place called Hoops Nursery that had a great range of trees but not sure if they are still around. I am thinking along your lines to replace two Robinia mop tops at the front.
I haven't been kind to the crab apple but as I said flowers are not a feature of this tree - it's more about fruit. It desperately wants to be loved by anybody. Happy hunting

Hoops does still exist and they are very helpful. They are also next door to whistlepipe nursery if you're in the market for uncommon perennials.

Arborwest have most of the Flemings range, including the crab apples. I can't remember where they are, but they're in the yellow pages.

I'm also looking for a small deciduous tree this year. I will probably settle for the good old reliable flowering-plum. These will put up with Perth's heat better than the cherries.
