Magnolia Soulangeana

Does anyone know the name of the common Magnolia Soulangeana that has light pink shaped cups with a splash of dark in them. You often see them around old houses. I think they might be Rustic Rubra and am not sure.

Also, any ideas on successfully propogating these magnolias by cuttings. Hardwood in winter maybe?

thank you

Hi firegirl, while surfing the web looking for magnolias to grow where I live, I can across this info about your tree, yes common name is superba rosea, and rustic rubea its also called the saucer tree, that I can see by its beautiful flower.

Propogating is by tip cutting either late spring or early summer, cut pieces 8-13cm (3-5ins)long, leave only the top three leaves on, if leaves are too long cut in half, cut off a thin strip of wood near the base, put cutting in rooting hormone place in mixture of 50/50 peat moss and grit ??? keep moist but not wet. Hope this helps.

Mistymorn,

May your garden always be watered and have no weeds! Thank you very much for responding. I often check to see whether anyone has placed a follow up but alas alack until now, not a one.

I'll have to wait until next year to take the summer cuttings. Because I had no idea when to take them, but the tree is deciduous, I decided to take some hardwood cuttings this winter. I've just put about 50 cuttings in. One pot I used rooting hormone, the other I didn't. I'll keep you posted on whether it worked. Otherwise, I'll be sneaking out and getting more cuttings in the Summer.

It is such a gorgeous gorgeous tree. It takes my breath away each spring when it flowers.

Happy Gardening

Firegirl thanks for the e-mail, yes I would have a go at cuttings anytime and I would be pleased to know how they are coming along. Try taking more cuttings in November as that would be about the right time to do it.

I have just come on from potting up ten Hibiscus cuttings my neighbour gave me yesterday, they are the most beautiful colour red with yellow, and yellow with orange I hope they take too.

Good luck with your garden.

MM
