lassiandra/tibouchina pruning

How much should I cut off my lassiandra when it comes time to prune it in August. I dont want it to get too leggy but I dont want to kill it either. Can someone tell me what causes some of the leaves to turn a burnt orange. Is it lack of water or just something this plant does.

I prefer to trim my Tibouchinas all the time, taking off the flowers as they die. I get better results this way. The orange leaves seem to go away. Once established the Tibouchina doesn't need all that much water.

I have pruned my lassiandra/tibouchina severly and they have come back better than ever, nice strong branches and plenty of flowers.
