Plants for formal Hedges

I have been agonising over this for a long time. One of the garden "rooms" I want to create is a very formal one with tallish formal hedges and classic statues, water features etc. For the hedge walls I would have ideally liked to use Thuja Plicata, but our climate is way too humid and hot. The Leylandii Cypress would also create the right effect but I need to limit the height to aroung 2 to 2.5 metres and that does not work with this plant. The buxus range are rather too slow growing. I have considered various Lilli Pilli's but we do get light frosts (to -4 or -5) and whereas I used Syzgium Bronzed Aussie elsewhere, a few had problems with the odd 40+ days we had and the tips do burn a little with the frost. Photinia's are a little coarse in the leaves for the effect I want but I know they are hardy. Any other ideas or should I just move to Tasmania instead.

G'day Koeksoetie,
based on what you have described your climate sounds similar to my own at home. At work, HVG,the frosts are lighter. But with that in mind I would probably still suggest using Murraya paniculata. If you are concerned with the frost you could use a product such as Envy which coats the leaves with a film to protect it against the cold. I use it on Duranta 'Sheena's Gold'.Use according to the instructions. Different look altogether would be using Viburnum 'Emerald Lustre' - larger leaf but it can still be hedged successfully.
