Sick Pistachio nut trees

Are there any special "tricks" to successfully growing Pistachio nut trees? About 12 months ago I planted both male and female varieties, carefully following the planting instructions on the plant labels. Unfortunately, while I did achieve some new leaf growth these have now turned very sick looking. They are very dry, curled up, pale/unhealthy looking and appear to have suffered burnt spots. I water deeply once per week and have fertilised (mildly) with complete garden fertiliser. Does anyone have any suggestions I can try before they "go to God"?

Remember they are deciduous. You haven't had a cold span have you?
