Has anyone else had problems with their conifers leaves browning? I have a row of 4 yr. old Thuga Orientalis (Shirls Supreme) that have been growing quite happily along the edge of our drive way as a screen between a neighbour, as there is no fence. After those horrible hot and humid days finally relented I noticed the outer leaves were turning brown. They tend to get a little brown on the inner parts in summer and was told by the nursery (where Ibought them ) to put the nozzle of hose on jet spray and give them a good hard hose to remove browning to allow new green growth to appear. This usually works well, but this is the worst of ever seen them! Also the hosing does'nt seem to get rid of the outer browning only the inner ones. To make matters worse the main feature conifer- Cupressus Glabra ( Blue Ice) that is 5 yrs. old and about 3mtrs. tall has brown lower branches on one side that seem to be travelling higher, this part of tree gets alot of afternoon sun. There was a Geisha Girl growing next to it which grew huge and we removed about 6 mths. ago so it is no longer protected from sun on that side. Could this be causing the browning? I also read that over watering can cause browning and as we have a inground irrigation system that I use once a week in the summer that maybe it was getting too much water. The strong winds (130 klms. an hour) on Saturday has made it lean abit, I then discovered the trunk was quite loose in the soil, would that be due to over watering as well? Please help as I'm quite concerned that after all my hard work and expense (the humid weather also killed my daisys, lavender, genista and my two rose bushs weren't impressed either!) my garden is starting to look very sad and neglected!!!! All help will be greatly appreciated. Brenda. THIS IS THE LONGEST POSTING I'VE EVER DONE!! ARE YOU ALL STILL AWAKE??

We found our cupress Leylandii would move about if it got windy enough. I guess the soil dries out around the roots and the roots shrink a bit which allows the plants to move. We staked ours - big wooden stakes well out from the plant. Looked ugly, but over winter they re-anchored themselves and we took the stakes away. I can't see that overwatering would cause all the damage - especially during the hot weather. More likely they just got too hot, but they should come good over the cooler months.

Thank you for your reply Robyn, you've given me some hope. I forgot to mention that the larger conifer has been staked since it was quite small because it's so exposed to the wind but in the 130 klm. winds the rope tying it to the stake must have worn through and broke so it was leaning. Hopefully the cooler months will make them look better. Roll on winter! Cheers, Brenda.
