I'm hoping someone can help me choose a shrub to plant next to my "blue ice" conifer to hide the brown branches it has on one side where it was sunburnt during our recent heatwave.I'd like a shrub that has deep red foliage all year round and is obviously evergreen. The brown branches extend to the height of 1.3 mts. and the conifer is around 4 mts. tall. in full sun position. Probably need something fairly hardy and wind tolerant that grows to a height of around 1.5 mts. Can you suggest anything or am I asking too much? All help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Brenda.

I dont know any shrubs that have red foliage all year round I have one that has autumn tones but dont know the name. But looking in one of my garden books there is a Acalypha wilkesiana which has coppery red leaves. A red Cordyline perhaps, or Crotons. Where I live the Councils plants a red-purple shrub on the roundabouts. Euphoria cotinifolia is another coppery red one. Hope this helps. MM

Some bushes from metrosideros family also have red or bronze new growth, they are better suited to warmer climates.
thank you

Sorry I've taken so long to respond. Thank you so much for your ideas which are all good ones, and have heard of some of them. I'll have to do some research to pick the shrub best suited. Thanks again! Brenda.

I know this is not at all helpful, but such a shrub does exist - I've seen a hedge of them about the height you require - don't know what they are though .... sorry. (Saw them while driving along a busy road). Pop along to a good nursery ... good luck! |

How about a Cordyline Manner Suttonaie. It's very attractive, deep red or wine colored. I got one when I was in California and brought it home (legally) I keep it on my shaded patio. Otherwise the rabbits would eat it. They eat everything that does not move from them. Noone at the nursery knew much about it other then it was from Australia. Sure wish they had more info on Australian plants. it takes some doing to go internet to find out about these plants.
