Silver Birch - Whitespire
| | |

I have a few Silver Birch Whitespire which I think is a form of Betula Platyphylla. Around this time of year it sends up very long vertical branches from the normal side branches with huge leaves (relative to the normal birch size) that are half a hand length long.
Is this normal for birches?
These branches wreck the natural shape of the tree and the large leaves look out of place. I'll have to prune them.
Anyone else noticed this?
Cheers,

| Enclyclopaedia Botanica describes Whitespire as a "cultivar of very upright growth with clean white bark". From the photos I've seen it is quite unlike the weeping birch we are probably more used to seeing - much more upright, pyramid shape and, in mature trees, a multi-trunked appearance. The larger leaves are probably just a feature of new growth. |
