Growing Oak Tree from Acorn

Does anyone know if there are any tricks to this?
Do the acorns need soaking or just put them in? The shells were split when I collected them, and the acorns are healthy looking.....
I gather I will be testing my patience!

RE: Growing Oak Tree from Acorn

My reference book says to collect fresh acorns that have no weevil holes and to sow them immediately, as once the acorns dry out they cannot absorb water again and will not germinate. The seedlings have long tap roots, so the acorns should be planted individually into 4cm deep pots into any free-draining, mildly acid potting mix. Cover the acorn to its own depth. The seedlings should be potted up once or twice before being planted out into the ground. It doesn't say how long it will take the acorns to germinate (probably spring, is my guess).

It also says that oaks self-seed readily, so you might be able to find a few seedlings already growing around the parent tree. Good luck!
