`Tree choice advice

Posted by lakes WA Aust (lakes@iinet.net.au) on

I am about to remove a weeping willow from my yard due to root damage and continual dropping of leaves.
Can anybody recommend a shade tree that does not have the surface root problem I have now and does not drop leaves every day. The height can be as much as 8 mtrs. A deciduous
type is fine but most seem to have surface root problems.
I live in the Perth metro area northern suburbs.
Help please
Thanks,
Lakes

How about a native? There are some lovely small eucalypts, and there are some good nurseries in the north of Perth. Depends how much shade you want, I suppose.

Weeping willow is a BIG problem. There are not many trees that will give you the same surface root problems, apart from ficus maybe. You could plant any of the flowering prunus, chinese tallow, you could also shape a big deciduous shrub as a tree. As a bonsai specialist you can have fun with a bigger plant.
