Suggestions - Ornamental Shade Tree for Nth NSW

Posted by Blackcat2 NSW Aust (My Page) on

Hi, we've currently moved to acreage in northern NSW (near coffs) and I would like any suggestions for a nice shade tree that would suit this climate.

I would like something that has a dense canopy and is not too huge. The idea is to be able to put the kids swings beneath or somewhere they can escape the heat of the summer sun up this way.

I look forward to any suggestions!

Thanks,
Lyn

Calodendrum capense - Cape Chestnut
Beautiful tree, that flowers in mid-late Spring. It is covered in pink flowers, and you can hardly see the leaves. I dont know why they are'nt more popular. Lime green leaves. They can grow to have a canopy of about 8-10 metres wide, and around 10m tall. Try a search for a piccy.

If you want to look at natives (and who doesn't) you might consider Diploglottis australis which has large, felty compound leaves and tasty fruit, or castanospermum australe, the Moreton Bay chestnut, which has very colourful flowers. Also consider firewheel (Stenocarpus)or tree waratahs (alloxylon) which have nice big red flowers.

Diploglottis australis and Stenocarpus sinuatus doesnt provide much shade.

Waterhousia floribunda
Syzygium luehmanii
Acronychia octandra
Syzygium moorei
