Transplanting an old Azalea

I have a friend that has an evergreen Azalia which is about 40 years old and he needs to move it. I would appreciate information on the transplanting procedure that would give us the best chance of moving it and keeping it alive. He lives at Salisbury and it would be coming to my place at Forestdale.
I dont have any issues with getting the new site ready such as soil ph and positioning etc. More to do with timing and preparation before the big shift.

RE: Transplanting an old Azalea

Not sure if this helps but, We have very sucessfully moved Azalias approx 10 years old. [also evergreen] They have a relatively small tight root ball and are shallow rooted.
We transported them in hessian[eg.wet sac]in winter. Some roots were damaged when dug,so clipped them off. They never looked back, even kept all the leaves+flowered in spring.
If you have heavy frost it may be wise to do it late winter,
not sure on that one.Ours were replanted in September.Goodluck.
