Carefree Sunshine is hardy shrub but New Year is an older Grandiflora, which is also available as a climber. Both New Years are not shrubs and are only hardy to zone 6b. For climbers, grow tham against a trellis and loosely tie the longr canes to it with soft string or cloth strips. In our zone, Nature dictates how we prune if you're referring to spring pruning of winter dieback. For in season pruning, I cut off the spent blooms of Carefree Sunshine for a cleaner looking plant and faster repeat. New Year would be pruned like a hybrid tea, cutting the spent flower(s) off down to a thicker portion of cane just above an outward facing leaf. Chances are a climber version would not get very tall in cold growing zones if it lives after the first winter. In our zone plant own root shrubs for the best winter hardiness. On grafted shrubs, how hardy they are depends on how deep you plant the graft and if the graft survives a severe winter freeze. In zone 5 the graft is the weak point on the bush regardless of the hardiness of the named variety.

Ahhhh... Glad to see everyone lves the oranges as much as I do, but I am partial being in BIG ORANGE Volunteer country :) Beth - I hate to say that Flamenco was one of those weird Lowe' s finds this year (I know, but every once in a while you get a good one) and I actually ended up with a couple of these.... Kathy - I've added quite a few orange this year and they seem to thrive in our high temps this summer! You really shouldn't apply any kind of pesticide without knowing what the pest is. Malathion is a broad spectrum contact pesticide that has no residual effect. This means that the product can't control anything that doesn't actually come into direct contact with it while it is still wet. It's a cholinesterase inhibitor, by the way. Should be used only with extreme caution.
