Does anyone know this rose?

| Hi, This rose was rescued from a supermarket last year (at least the girls don't bring home stray animals anymore, just roses). It was clearly tagged Hannah Gordon, and it clearly isn't. It also isn't Iceberg, Elina or Margaret Merrill. I've searched my books but can't find a match. The buds have a green tinge, the blooms have a central glow which is lemon or gold depending on the light. The foliage is matt and dark green.
The only likely one I could find was Fabulous, but matching roses to photos in catalogues is dodgy.
Can anyone help, please? |

Hello Susette, I am a real newbie at this rose growing business but I do have the Swaines Fabulous rose that I got from Big W. It is my favourite as it has grown and flowered so well for me and is now about to burst forth with it's next lot of flowers. Here are a couple of pictures, now I am not saying yours is Fabulous but just thought you would like a picture of one.

| Thanks Marion, That's another one it's not. Yours has a lovely pink shading, mine's decidedly yellow, lemon or gold at times, but not pink. Does anyone have White Spray, that's another possibility? |

| Looks very similar to the one I have labeled as White Spray Cathy

| Sorry those photos are so small, they were definitely a lot bigger when I resized them. Hope you can make out the detail. The colouring is definitely creamy and the flower opens out to almost the same shape and look as yours. Cathy |

| Thanks Cathy, I think we have a match. A very attractive rose, just not what I expected. My party trick is to go around the garden and name each of the 100 plus, it was distressing to have to admit that another one was unknown. Now I only have 2 unknowns, both inherited from my mother, both about to bloom. |

Photos in books/guides/catalogues...you sure have that right. It's SO hard - you really have to see it in the real don't you. I know you replied to Cathy that you have a match but... Have you checked out the RHS Roses reference guide? There's one called Kent (flower size 5 cm or 2" across) which grows to 1m high by 1m wide but it says glossy leaves. Also a ground cover one called Swany which also grows to 1m x 2m wide which looks just like yours - flower size also 5cm or 2" wide. But, hey, you probably didn't want to hear that, right? Thanks Janine, but it really looks nothing like the photos I've seen of Swany. It's clearly a Floribunda. Cathy's photos show the form better than mine do. "Spray" is very appropriate. Wasn't the rain in Melbourne a blessing? Even though it's wrecked a lot of the big blooms. Poor Madame Bovary just about collapsed under her huge sodden flowers. Sue |

| Suesette and Janine Part of my thinking was, I am not sure how many varieties end up as bagged roses at discount stores etc but my White Spray and what Suesettes 'could be' were both 'bagged' and from discount outlets. This is its second season and its growing much taller than the first one. I am glad I put it at the back of the bed. Rain is good, came down again this morning so I must away and chop off some heads that are balding by the minute in the breeze. Cathy |

| Looks mighty like White Spray to me. The cream centre of the bud and the red stamens of the open bloom are a dead giveaway. It will grow to 7', is a Grandiflora though registered as Floribunda, for reasons I won't go into. A very good rose. Bred by Edward Le Grice in 1968 from seedling x Iceberg. It is NOT the Lens rose of same name bred in 1980, and which is a shrub. |
Here is a link that might be useful: White Spray

I have purchased a few potted roses from supermarkets they are usually a lot cheaper and have noticed that it is impossible to believe what the tag tells you. Now I always only buy a rose that has a flower on it so that I can see what I am getting. I have also seen the same thing in Bunnings but not quite so much. Andy |
