Miniature climber?

| Is there such a thing? I went to Gardening Australia Live at Caulfield on Thursday, and on impulse, bought a small cast iron (or perhpas aluminium) trellis for a climber. It is about 1m tall, and 30cm wide, and would be nice for a tiny climbing rose in a large pot, if such a thing exists. Any ideas? |

I know there is such a thing, because I saw mention of it recently in an article I was reading. Don't know much more than that unfortunately, but at least you know it's worth looking for. Good luck, Cheers, Dee. |

| Perhaps if you aim for a micro-mini & try out the miniature rose specialists for this particular job. I have a few miniature climbers, but they are a lot taller than 1 metre - e.g., Clg Jackie and Clg Golden Century. I've seen Clg China Doll, but that grows large enough to hang on a swag. There was a miniature specialist in N.S.W. who advertised in the Your Garden magazine, but I think they've been either taken over, or merged with another nursery (maybe The Rose Paradise, it seems to have the same address but the mag I grabbed is from 2003 and this website doesn't offer much more than contact numbers.) |
Here is a link that might be useful: The Rose Paradise

| I have one called Warm Welcome I got from Thomas for Roses. So far, it would fit nicely on your trellis, though it may not be your colour as it is orange-red. I just looked at Thomas' catalogue and counted a number of others listed as mini climbers- Telford's Promise (coppery salmon), Softie (creamy white), Rosalie Coral (bright flame), Pink Cameo (rose pink), Little Girl (orange pink), Laura Ford (yellow)....as you can see I have been working my way backwards through the alphabet; there are heaps more one could list. You can get a catalogue by emailing: thomashg@chariot.net.au. |

| Softee is thornless and a lovely rose. Not to big either. |

Thanks all - something to go on with now! Thanks Meryl and Sally for some names to look up on google. Telford's Promise or Little Girl sound interesting :-) Cheers, Jan |

The thing that is miniature about miniature climbers are the flowers not the plant, although some don't grow huge and would be a good size for a pillar or small arch. A trellis that is only 1m tall would probably be to small. Many of the older varieties of miniature roses have plants that grow to the 1m mark. If the trellis isn't to narrow you maybe able to espalier one of them to the trellis. I have 2 miniature climbers Magic Dragon & Minnie Mouse. MD has a 3m pillar he can climb and Minnie had a similar height of wall to cover. Vivienne |

| The thing about miniature roses is infact the plant it is this that the rose is classisafied on. The Fairy has been around for a very long time and has lovely small miniature flowers but the plant is not allowed to be show in the miniature classes at rose shows because it growth habit is large. |

I understand that, bU I just thought there might be one or 2 available that were only short growing climbers. In most plant groups there is a wide variety of types, with some that are only fit round the edges of their classification. I would imagine that, given the number of roses introduced each year, there might be a few that fit my requirements. Otherwise, perhaps a tall, more vertical growing miniature, that might reach to 2, to 3 ft might suit my requirements? |

| Warm Welcome is the only one I have experience of and its leaves and overall size are miniature in my experience. The flowers (single) are larger than the average mini, though still small. For others like this, guess you would have to ask for expert opinion from whichever grower you decide to use. |

| If you are considering training a bush miniature rose up your metre high trellis, the Bernardella collection may be something to consider. They are described as large & upright. Has anyone else grown any of these? I grew Figurine a few years ago, it was upright and pliant (needed support) but mine died before it reached maturity so I've no idea whether it would reach the metre height. Perhaps have a chat with Tracey Treloar (Treloar Roses) she knows the chap who bred them. Best of luck with your quest Jan! Von. |

OK so I wasn't quite right. I spoke to a few people at the Vic. Rose Society meeting last night. They said that the average miniature climber reaches about 2 metres. Figurine and Softee were suggeted as staying small enough to fit your trellis. One of the older members who grows 400 miniature roses and including many mini climbers did tell me that the climbers may not grow well in a pot, but I don't see why that would be. Vivienne |

Thanks Vivienne. I will look into both of those. I just love the name "Softee" :-) I can tell you why a miniature rose might not grow too well in a pot for me. Lack of water and fertiliser, dogs tipping it over into the garden below the deck, disease from when io suddenly discover it is too dry so I desperately flood it with water. need i go on? I'm not too good with pots. I might even situate it in one of my new raised garden beds out the front. I will give it some thought first :-) |
