What roses did you plant this winter??

Posted by Bluebelle_Riverina z9 NSW (My Page) on

I was a little slow getting my new roses into the ground this year, but they are finally there. I never seem to be able to get myself organised to get mail order roses and I am at the stage where I have most of the common one's I want. But I really like to see the roses I'm buying and the general nurseries only have limited selection.

I have added Blueberry Hill to the mauve bed, and also a couple more Angel Face. Best Friend has gone in to a bed with mostly darker pinks, and I planted a third Manou Meilland to make a group of three. I purchased a Charles de Gaulle from the nursery so I hope to compare it with the original group of three C de G which are too like Lady X for my liking.

Tiffany is still waiting to be planted out, but she is in a pot so will wait a little longer till I get the energy and time to dig another hole. I have been busy remulching the garden, getting ready for the summer, and pruning things like the buddleias and escallonias. It's a bit of an effort to mulch all the garden, but it saves on weeding later.

Next year I'm definitely going to get Veteran's Honour (City of Newcastle), Opening Night and Barbra Striesand. Perhaps I should order them now!

RE: What roses did you plant this winter??

Hi
I have a few new bare roots this year which are growing well and have produced a few buds!
They are:
Gruss an Aachen
Reines des Violettes
Yolande d Aragon
Mary McKillop.
All my other roses are in production mode and I will have to get out there and give them a feed!
Its very tempting to buy more but we dont have any more room!
Good Luck with your new plantings
cheers
Michelle

Ah, those assessments of no more room..I remember them well..back when I had sixty roses as I recall, when I got to 100 I wondered how on earth I fitted them in! Never mind necessity, obsession is the mother of invention!

I've coveted Veteran's Honour myself, great name, and by the looks of it a pretty good rose too. If you really want them, no harm in ordering really early, you can always add to the order later after all.

I won't count relocations, new to the garden this year are just Mrs BR Cant, she gets Louise Odier's (relocated) spot, Louise is small and has a way to go on the vigour stakes before a garden spot is strictly necessary. She gradually lost vigour in a position with more shade than she appreciated. Mrs BR Cant is frequently recommended as thoroughly reliable and vigorous, so she can have the running for now.
Mrs Reynolds Hole is getting Maman Cochet's (relocated)spot. Maman is going to live in a pot, where I can protect her from heavy dewfall, as she seems to like balling in the open garden. She's been spectacular in a pot for me in the past, much better than in the ground, so that's her alottment from now on.
Brother Cadfael, now he was just obsession on full reign. I just love the name and he was recommended, so for now he can live in a pot. Same with Mme Wagram. Charles Mallerin scratches a long standing itch.

Mulching is certainly a full time job at this time of year. I keep telling myself it's good exercise...for the eftpos machine if nothing else!

RE: What roses did you plant this winter??

It has been a while since I've posted on the forum, but I have done a tiny bit of lurking. For those of you who may remember me I still live with my mother and I've now managed to squeeze about 350 roses into her front garden. Since I've really been running out of space I've started on miniature roses but I am starting to scratch around for space for them as well. This winters purchases were limited to a climbing miniature Red Dragon, who I am hoping will be happy on a pillar. Other miniature roses are Minnie Mouse, Plum Duffy and some of the Parade roses from Bunnings.
I won Princess of Wales in the raffle at the Victorian Rose Society meeting on Tuesday night. I am hoping she will be happy in a pot.

RE: What roses did you plant this winter??

I remember you Vivienne with your yard full of roses, nice to catch up again after all these years! You'll be happy with Minnie Mouse (aka Roller Coaster) its a really nice stripey.

Congrats winning the raffle, be interested to know what you think of PoW. I won a raffle a couple of years ago, Bonica standard - which I'm a bit concerned about, it sends out long canes like Bonica the bush does...how on earth it will make a decent shaped standard is yet to be seen.

RE: What roses did you plant this winter??

I planted 7 new (new to me) David Austins:

Wild Eve, The Alnwick Rose, Grace, Benjamin Britten, The Mayflower, Christopher Marlow, Comptes de Champagne & Jubilee Celebration.

6 little "Sweet Dreams"
6 Amber Nectar
8 Just Joey standards
5 Bonica
5 Burgundy iceberg - 4 of which were moved from elsewhere, and the other came free with Treloars order.

Aprikola, Love Potion, The Karnival, Angela, Hanza Park, Diamant, Busy Bee, Heidesommer, Pincushion, 2 Blueberry Hill, Paul Bocuse, Maggie (Taberer), Sonia Rykiel, Betty Boop, several others whose names I can't remember.

A mix of 14 plants: Alister Clark, Suitor, Borderer, Australia Felix, Marjorie Palmer

2 X Twilight Glo
3 Climbing Pinkie
Madeline & Genevieve - either side of an arch

Raubritter, Jeanie Lajoie (actually they are all still in their pots waiting to go in :-)

Echo, Marie Jeane & more Alister Clark as a hedge of polypoms.

plus a few others. I still have 4 red climbing roses to go on the fence of the new chook run - Pauls scarlet and an unknown that I am shifting from elsewhere, and Editor stuart and another whose name I forget.

I also have Souvenir de Malmaison in a pot to plant when the palepink/white rose garden is finished.

Um ..... I also planted a few rosa rugosa - but they might have been back in Autumn - along with the rest of the pink/whites - Souv. de St. Annes, Sally Holmes, william Christie, Rosendorf Sparrieshoop, Mary Magdalene, The Moth, Glore de Lyonnaise, (william Christie has to change places with Maggie)

Ok - there were probably a few others - Oh yes - 2 Pierre de ronsard on obelisks. And another 18 groundcover roses - but they were at work under the new Pyrus Callyana.

I'm pretty much rosed out. Bring on iris season!

(I think I can squeeze a few more in next year)

What a fantastic garden you will have Sparaxis. I would like to visit in Nov. the Alistair Clark home/garden at Bulla to reassess his lovely roses. My additions were Evelyn, Donald Bradman, New Dawn, Squatters Dream (love Mrs Fred Danks & Daydream), climbing Peace, Reine de Violette, Lordly Oberon, Brigadoon, Grand Siecle & Grand Impression.
I am also looking forward to the iris season. This time of year is just magic. I should commit to paper the arrangement but I might have to hide it in a gardening diary. When you list them it looks like serious dollars...ah but what joy I tell myself!

RE: What roses did you plant this winter??

Hi Vivienne. Lovely to read your post. I am amazed at your ability to grow some many roses on a suburban block. I am a bit of a lurker most of the time and I often wonder about the people who were frequent posters for a time and then never heard of again.

Hi Vivienne

Were you happy with the Parade roses from Bunnings?
MM had some beautiful photos of this rose a few days ago and they looked sensational.
I think I might have to visit Bunnings to check them out :))
Cheers

RE: What roses did you plant this winter??

Thanks for the welcome back everyone. Rosesforme, I am happy with the Parade roses from Bunnings so far they seem to be doing well. I didn't know that Minnie Mouse is Roller Coaster. Thanks for that info Yvonne. I do like striped roses and the striped minis are very cute. I am looking for one I saw at the Autumn Vic. Rose Society show called Magic Dragon. PoW has a huge sucker growing from the base which was very intersting to show people at the meeting but I will have to deal with it before I pot her up.

RE: What roses did you plant this winter??

Bluebelle, you should definitely get that City of Newcastle that you mention is on the books for next year. This year I planted my second because it is such a lovely rose. It does tend to get a little blackspot but not too bad, and in return it produces lots and lots of pure red roses that last really well in the vase. In fact this inspired my winter plantings this year - 5 new roses, all fragrant red hybrid teas. This should be a good bed! Included Mister Lincoln, Fragrant Cloud, Fragrant Charm, Sir Donald Bradman, and of course the City of Newcastle.

And I can pick myself bunches of fragrant red roses all year, and make my husband wildly jealous.

 o
RE: What roses did you plant this winter??

Hi femmeradsy, my husband "hi-jacked" the red roses in my garden. First year I was planting roses he happened to be with me in Big W and filled the trolley with "his selection". Next year I had to plant another red bed so that I could get the ones I wanted. Now I'm thinking about joining the two red beds with more reds - hence City of Newcastle and Opening Night. He thinks he is set now for Valentines Day every year. However this year he volunteered to help prune the roses and now has even asked for his own pair of Felco secateurs. As I have over 300 roses and adding, I am very grateful for the help and think a pair of secateurs is cheap compared to paying someone to come in to help. A good investment in the future! The first year I started planting roses, I got up to about 100 and he told me "that's enough, you won't be able to look after them all". Now, after seeing them flowering from October to June, he loves roses so much he wants to help with the pruning, and doesn't mind when I add a few more. Now that's a turn around in three years!

When he offered to prune I said that I would do the cutting and he could cart away the pieces as I went along. But after only about 15 bushes, as I explained why I was cutting where, I could see that he was wanting to cut too - you could see his fingers "twitching". Anyway he was a great help.

To all the others who have responded to this post - you all seem to have planted so many, my number this year seems pretty measly. Might be just the impetus I need to start my 2006 list and go looking in the garden for where I can fit in "just a few more roses".

How wonderful to both enjoy the rose garden together. That would be double the pleasure

 o
RE: What roses did you plant this winter??

Yes, once a week from October to June we take a quiet walk around the garden together, usually in the early evening, to see what's blooming, what's looking particularly beautiful, etc.

Although he thought I was crazy wanting metal labels for my roses "it'll look like a botanical garden!", he supervised the boys cutting, welding and helped to paint them. Now he thinks they're a great idea because he doesn't have to keep asking me their names (the roses that is, not the boys!). Really, our roses are like our children and we like to see that each one is doing well.

The metal labels are great because they don't break when I step on them and best of all they are just large enough to not get lost in the straw when I re-mulch.

 o
RE: What roses did you plant this winter??

Wow Bluebelle! I don't know what makes me more jealous: how wonderful your rose gardens sound, or how enthusiastic and helpful your hubbie is!

 o
RE: What roses did you plant this winter??

This is the longest bout of flu I have ever had *sigh*
Almost over it though.
It is great to see you again Vivienne.:)
I didn't order or buy any roses this year-didn't even plant the ones in pots that were waiting to be planted.
Spent the whole winter huddled inside with the flu-good thing though is I caught up on some craft stuff.
I DID sow lots of rose seeds back in May and now have a healthy crop of baby roses-hundreds of them!
I can't wait to see them flower-at least this year I recorded the mother even though fathers are unknown.
I did some bourbons, mosses, climbers,Sparrieshoop and Altissimo,Lavender Pinocchio and lots more that I can't think of at the moment.
Sparrieshoop seeds leapt out of the ground and look very strong and vigorous as babies.
Should be some interesting results.
Meanwhile my garden is a mess of weeds and I dug no new beds either-gonna have a busy spring I think.*groan*
regards to all
sandie

RE: What roses did you plant this winter??

Lovely to hear you are feeling better Sandie and surrounded by such beautiful spring babies. I am envious as all my winter cuttings, except one, have died. The "one" was a beautiful rose belonging to a friend who brought me a "thick as a big pencil" cutting. I put them in a styrofoam box with coarse sand and compost and watered them religiously and put plastic over them in the frosts. The cuttings that you sent me Sandie are all jumping out of their skins and they were in the same boxes. So I conclude that perhaps my cuttings were too thin as most of my roses are still very young and as yet do not have that thick as a pencil canes. I also planted some seeds from hips but so far no babies emerging. I have a lot to learn still. But on the up side, all the roses I have bought this winter and have been given by friends are putting out so much growth it is amazing - some of them are almost planted in 'dairy mix' from the local landscape supplies as I was so busy I did not have time to go and get good soil and so just added some dairy mix to the thick clayey soil here and in they went - and they are jumping. Now my ponies are living on lucerne as there is still no grass here so the roses all get heaped with the pony-processed lucerne pretty much only a day or two after it is produced and while I make sporadic attempts to keep it away from the roots, all I can say is they all love it.

I could not possibly remember what I have planted but am spending the day in the garden - mulching mulching and weeding - and will make a list and post. I put in a lot and moved a lot. Can 't wait for summer.

 o
RE: What roses did you plant this winter??

Great to hear from you again Vivienne. Glad to see you are finding more places for roses :-) Also pleased to hear that you are recovering Sandie.

I have bought far too many roses this year (at least DH keeps telling me) and I still have 3 Jubilee Celebrations in a pot because I haven't decided on where to put them.

Yolande D'Aragon - is doing well, has had two small flowers, no way was I going to pull them off. But due to this head cold I can't smell a thing.

William Shakespeare 2000 x 6
Grace x 6
Queen Mother x 3
Jubilee Celbration x 6
Heidesommer x 3
Crown Princess Margaretha
Parole - thanks to Fran and her enthusiasm. It has had two flowers and they are stunning.
SDLM - this is my third. I love this rose.
Renae x 2
Mrs Herbert Stevens x 2 - the first two didn't break dormancy so I bought a replacement pair from Perrott's in Brisbane. I couldn't wait another year.

I think that is about it.

WS2000 looks like it might live up to its reputation but I don't know if I will be vigilant enough with the spraying. So I'll see how it goes.

So far Parole is a stand out.

Glad to hear you're all enjoying your new purchases.

Anne, I think I might have to go with the name tags soon. It's taking me longer and longer to remember the name of each rose as I go around the garden.

Next year I'm going to expand the beds and get more Teas.

 o
RE: What roses did you plant this winter??

Sandie, what are you going to do with all your Sparrieshoop babies - says she who got torn to shreds pruning mine before I eventually shovel pruned it...

RE: What roses did you plant this winter??

10 rugosas bare rooted:2 each of Vanguard, Peony Blanc, Rosariae de L'Hay, Pink Grootendorst, Sounvenir de Philemon Cochet all in a new bed edged with Lavender Avonview. Never had rugosas before so hope they'll do well. I was very late ordering but at least I got them at reduced prices.

A little bit late....I didn't grow my garden much this winter...major garden alterations are in the works for next year so I didn't want to change mine as much so in an established garden I planted some new roses ( because I am not that strong)...Perfume perfection, Princess of Monaco, France Libre, Pappa Meilland, Alec's red, Baroness de Rothershield. My garden is now full of it...next year I might transfer some to the new beds...
Cheers,
Hunty

 o
RE: What roses did you plant this winter??

I have dug up a new garden bed with a sunnier position. I ordered:
In order of planting
2 Westerlands (1 is in the shadier bed) and both are going great.
Peace which is struggling a little (probably not enough water, the leaves are mostly small and no buds)
Lollypop - freebie
Solitude (hubbies choice- only leaves at this stage)
Graham Thomas - lots leaves and buds
Blueberry Hill
Standard Apricot Nectar - real bonus find as a late stock bare root! 2 lovely rose buds.

Graham Thomas - going great
Blueberry - planted later so only leave

RE: What roses did you plant this winter??

Hi everyone
I thought I would bump this thread because it was so interesting .Now that we are further into the season how are they all going?
Are you happy/disappointed with your choices?
cheers

 o
RE: What roses did you plant this winter??

I've just started this winter, but my list will expand, for sure:

8x Mr Lincoln
4x Crysler Imperial
2x Oklahoma
2x Papa Meilland
4x Friesia
4x Gold Bunny
4x Holtermann's Gold
Gold Medal
Arizona
Ena Harkness
Iceberg
Moulin Rouge
Pascali
Perfume delight
Shocking blue

Sarah Van Fleet (rugosa)
Constance Spry (climbing)
Lamarque (climbing)

Planning to add more climbers, rugosas, English and Old roses. At the very end of my gardening efforts, I'd like to have 108 roses ...

-Tom

 o
RE: What roses did you plant this winter??

Hi Tom,

What is significant about the number 108?

Then again, I wonder if you will be able to stop there? If you're here on this forum you've probably been bitten by the rose bug! :)

 o
RE: What roses did you plant this spring??

Well ... I found some obelisks in the local hardware store ... so now I have planted climbing Pinkie, climbing Renae, and am on the lookout for Altissimo.

Blueberry Hill didn't do at all well, so I have removed her to a pot and am hoping for a miracle. The two Angel Face are also looking poorly - I think they need better drainage. I am thinking I may have to abandon roses in that patch, although Blue River is in the same spot and is doing OK. She lived in a pot for a year, so got going before I planted her out.

I finally planted Tiffany, and she is doing well. Best Friend is slow, but has some buds now, and Charles de Gaulle is also coming along slowly.

Happily, some roses that were slow to grow last year are now shooting ahead. Ahh - it's all about patience.

 o
RE: What roses did you plant this winter??

Bluebelle _Riverina
I have a dodgy patch as well.
The roses seem to start ok then look a a bit straggly. They are not thriving.
I think it is drainage as well.
I want to move them but my other half says to wait and see,put some manure on them from the farm and see how they go.
Oh well, we'll give it a go but I am itching to move them.
cheers
Michelle
