Anyone growing Laevigata...?

Mine is budding up now - its a magnificent climber that is never totally bare of leaves. I've planted a Katie Pianto Rose alongside it this year and dream about the combination next spring.

Had to look this up to see it's the Cherokee rose...I don't grow it but certainly admire it. Magnificent around Mildura and at Rustons rose garden, calls you from a very long distance. Certainly a must in a large garden such as yours. I might give it a go one day. I've certainly never seen a more impressive rosey spectacle than this one in flower. You must be excited!
I'm not familiar with Katie Pianto, what's that like?

RE: Anyone growing Laevigata...?

Katie Piano is similar except its a light pink. The climber is quite rampant and should cope with Laevigata and a pink montana clematis thats entwining its way through the Laevigata on the trellis and into an adjoining tree. At Urrbrae House, Laevigata shares a trellis and arbour with Sombreuil, spectacular - Wow! But unfortunately we didn't get to see it in bloom when we visited Rustons.

Ross Roses has the KP rose growing in their display garden and its really eye catching in full bloom. I'll have to wait until next spring, mine is just a baby.

You're right, you do need a large garden to show off Laevigata, its a house eater & only blooms in spring - but what a display in full flight!

Von.

Von, that sounds an absolutely delightful trio. Pink montana clematis is so lovely and would be a nice contrast in flower size and form to the two roses.

What a luxury to be able to work on a pallete of such a large scale, but I take my hat off to you too, sometimes I find my much smaller garden a bit overwhelming, with all the other aspects of life to be juggled as well. To have developed such a spectacle as you have shared on your website really must take dedication.

My daughter's Laevigata is out in full bloom...unfortunately I had the wrong lens on my camera when we went visiting. Here's a link to a shot of a single bloom...but to see the climber covered in these is SO spectacular.

Here is a link that might be useful: Laevigata

Is this your Katie Pianto's Rose?

No, its not as dark as that and it has a paler centre. Have you got the latest Ross Roses catalogue? There's a picture on page 51. It covers itself just like Laevigata does and may even be MORE rampant than L! Ross's have a HUGE climber on their fenceline, when in full flight it takes the eye for quite a distance - one is drawn over to see it closer.

PS...love those superb shots of L by Larry on D's forum!!

G'day Yvonne, I went out just now to have a look at my plants. They grow under difficult conditions, in that the winds rip thru them, I'm coastal. One was used to hide part of a shed and the other two(one would have done this job)are growing through a dead wattle. The wattle has broken down a bit over the years which has left me with a lovely mound of apple green in it's place, perfect position really. Much nicer grown as a free shrub than plonk against anything. I don't pamper them at all and feel they are not at their best but still have provided a lovely show just the same. A tree close by has grown into a monster so these roses experience some shade now. They are flowering beautifully over the fence though!! >: [

So anyone wanting to plonk one in, full sun for the big flowery display! Get tired of having to get out of the yard to enjoy the display :(

cheers
varmi

Anyone that wants to see Katie Pianto's rose only needs to head to Flemington Racecourse in November. (I know its not so easy for you interstaters!)..Planted on cyclone fence along north/eastern end entrance (opposite arches) right along entire fence. Looks great and got info from Terry FREEMAN (gardener) as I was greatly interested in that and specimen of Cl Lady Hillingdon on eastern end grandstand rails...

Cheers - Garry

RE: Anyone growing Laevigata...?

I have planted 2 new laevigatas - one is in a large bed with canary bird but if they spill over that they can each extend a few metres in any direction and the other laevigata is going in behind them in a bed between 2 gums. I also just planted a bracteatea in a bed not too far from them - I have a country property and look forward to some huge shrubs and blooms one day - canary bird is putting out some blooms now. I do love the apple green color of laevigata's leaves.
