| A friend of mine is watching re-runs on cable television of 2001 Gardening Australia. She enthusiastically told me she wanted to get hold of a wonderful, award-winning, fragrant and amazingly disease-resistant rose called Perfume Perfection. I told her to take mine as I was dead sick of fighting rust and black spot on it. She was stunned as this rose had been touted as being invincible. We were in Flower Power yesterday and didn't see any PP being sold among the other roses. It seems to have been swept under the carpet. I'd love it if Gardening Australia did a programme on what went wrong. |

| I've passed on the message to a friend you works on the program. Don't hold your breath waiting for a story. However, at least they should know that presenters shouldn't wax lyrical about new release roses until they have been well tested regards Deryn |

| Well said Deryn, but there's more to it than that. Let's face it. Nobody on these TV gardening shows knows squat about roses. The producer's job is to get stories. Some agents for overseas rose producers are very willing to give a story to the producer. He believes what he is told and it goes to air. He believes he has a knowledgable source. What he has got is a publicity manager (seen to be dependable, and who comes to you, you don't have to chase around). Advertising people from all of the glossies contact me regularly for material to earn them advertising revenue. I used to oblige, and when the publication of the "rose special" came out, it was full of rosey drivel. So then I would ask to speak to the Editor, and suggest they get editorial material from a knowledgable source (modestly, such as myself), and they might be slightly interested, but they have a writer in the loop who needs to be gainfully employed, and so nothing eventuates. This is not sour grapes. I've been there too long for that. It's the system. Sell your rag for the most at least cost, and move onto the next edition. Quality and real value for money are not in the equation. And bad news (the truth about new roses in most cases) doesn't sell. "The latest must be best" syndrome. I never take on a new rose for propagation until I have seen it perform, and I rarely do anyway, because it's more of the same ol', same ol'. If you can avoid the snake oil spruikers, ask any reputable grower for advice about what are the best roses, and don't be surprised if he refers you to 50 year olds, and older. He DOES know. |

| Yes, those 50 yr olds are really great!! The early to mid 1960s would probably be my favourite HT vintage. Gosh that must have been an exciting time to be a breeder. |

Hi. First time on this forum. I found out recently , that one of my florabundas was mislabelled , so I was doing a little internet detective work to try to identify what I have , ( esp. because this one is dependable and thriving in our Florida climate and I would like another). However ,that aside , I also 'Googled ' Perfume Perfection ,( to verify that mine is correctly labelled ) and I came up with this post. I just wanted to add to rross' comment. Perfume Perfection was easy to find this spring , here in central east coast Florida. It is pretty and fragrant ,but as far as being disease resistant and invincible , that is of course subjective . With our summer conditions , ( daily temperatures in the 90's ,unrelenting heavy humidity and frequent rainfall ) I have to treat this rose with a systemic fungicide , every 5 - 7 days. Of course it is not abnormal to need this regularly ,for fungus/blackspot , but my Perfume Perfection is very unforgiving . If I do not stick to this regimen , ( found out the hard way ) it will succumb and completely defoliate in days !!! Gillian |

Ah Lucky I saw this thread. This rose was on on my wish list and I have come close to buying it a few times--lucky I didnt. I have suspicions about Delbards Paul Cezanne.Mine flowers beautifully but only yellow not with the pink colour which is why I bought it-I loved the colour combo. The nursery from which I bought it here in Melb said I had to wait until it "settled"--We'll see -this is its second season. cheers Michelle |
