looking for a few roses

Hi All,

Wondering if anyone might know where to get Blue River (HT) and Purple Splendour (F)? They appear in The Simple Guide to Growing Roses, so must be available somewhere, but I can't find them in available catalogues. Any further info on the mauve/purple spectrum would also be appreciated, since the only one I can find is Fragrant Plum, and it doesn't seem particularly suited to our hot summers.

Cheers,
Michelle

Hi Michelle,
Blue River was available from Magic Garden Roses. They are easy to find on the net. They may be able to tell you about Purple Splendor as well.
Try www.magicgardenroses.com.au
Their site is displayed on Australian Nurseries online.
See Ya.

I'm wondering if I've got your request right....but here goes, a list of mauve roses readily avaiable
,
I have fragrant plum in a very warm position here and it's very very vigorous and floriferous, but it tends to reach for the sky and flower high up.
Blue Moon - very fragrant one of my favourites, but other's posting on the forum haven't always agreed
Charles de Gaulle, I've only recently stopped torturing this poor rose and am looking forward to big things this year :o)
Angel Face - no good for me, and the standard I bought mum died..but others rave, certainly pretty and frilly
Lilac Charm - only new last season in my garden but it did well in both growth and flowers despite the drought conditions and has lovely single flowers.
Lavender Pinoccio - I'm not sure I'd really classify this in the lavender /mauve range, it has a tinge, but I'd put it in a separate class of "weird colours". Very nice though.

haven't tried these others:
Vol de Nuit
Lady X
Lagerfeld
Shocking Blue (I have to wonder who named this one! certainly doesn't tempt me)

Some others in the mauve/purple spectrum that I have growing are:

Angel Face - love this rose, perfume and colour
Blueberry Hill - just planted
Big Purple - darkest purple in a HT
Tutu Mauve - mauve and frilly
Purple Cloud - very prolific bloomer
Shocking Blue - should be called shocking pink
Love Potion - beaut perfume but prone to black spot

I also have Lady X - she flowers very well but is fairly pale and wishy washy. I'm supposed to have three Charles de Gaulle, but they are so like Lady X that I think they were mislabelled.

Another which I have in my mauve bed is Queen Adelaide. She is pinky mauve and fades to the mauve shade - has a perfume to die for.

I have Fragrant Plum and it does very well in my hot dry climate - always has flowers and good perfume too.

I haven't had much success with Blue River, but I think it needs a better drained position than the one it's in.

ACtually I paid good money for Stainless Steel, but it was a bit too subtle for my taste, very very pale. Might be better with some darker mauve varieties, it didn't go at all with the soft pinks where I had it.
I bought Big Purple on the spot on the strength of the scent of the flower on it at the time. very nice.

....I always wonder whether that's how Shocking Blue got it's name....not blue at all.
