Yes, sounds really interesting. I'll be sure to have a look. I saw some beauties last year in Hay. Mrs Harold Alston was one I thought absolutely georgeous if I recall correctly. Large though, and I don't have a spot at the moment.

Thank you for the link Jocelen. I am planting several roses bred by Alister Clark and hope to plant more next season. I enjoyed the book written by Tommy Garnett but am looking forward to reading these articles.

Cheers

Hi Cassie,
Could you tell me what is that book you are speaking off?

Cheers,

Sorry about that Jocelen - must have had a senior moment!!! The book is "Man of Roses - Alister Clark of Glenara and His Family" T R Garnett 1990 Kangaroo Press ISBN 0 86417 332 6

"The book explains how Alister came to live there and how his connection with the horticultural establishment in Britain inspired him to breed daffodils and roses, whose fame spread worldwide......The appendices contain detailed horticultural information never before collected. The book is based on research among family papers. It combines detailed and specialist horticultural information with a portrait of a close-knot Scottish family which had a great influence on Australia directly and indirectly". From the inside front cover.

Jocelen I searched for six years before I located this book and I think I paid dearly when I purchased it!!!!

Thankyou.
I also love the site and have bookmarked it as it is one that deserves to be dipped into when one has some time to devote to rosie reads,

Some of you may be interested. His home, Glenara is going to be auctioned later this year.
I will find the exact date and let you know.
It would be worth a trip to see the beautiful grounds and go to the Memorial Garden at Bulla at the same time.
I DO hope that the grounds are not built on.
The old roses stil tumble down the hill, and the daffodils he bred are all in flower as well.
Losing it would be a tragedy.

Today I am planting another 15 roses bred by Alister Clark - including the one named 'Glenara'. I agree with you Fran I hope the grounds will not be built on. It appears some rose growers who specialize in growing his roses are reducing the range available. Many of the climbers are not suitable for small gardens and many are only spring flowering.

Really intersting to read Alister Clarks articles, there's some from 1944 referring to severe drought years, and his cultivation practices. Apparently when he refers to not coddling his roses, he's even more savage than I am! This material is gold as my daughter would say. Might even prompt me to try a seedling or two myself!

Thanks again for the link.

I hope the grounds in Glenara will be saved. The Alister Clark Memorial Rose Garden in Bulla is so fantastic too.
