| I grew some roses from cuttings and suddenly they got infested with aphids. I had the new little rose plants all ready to give away as presents to friends but couldn't get rid of the aphids so I sprayed them with white oil. It killed the aphids but crisped up the leaves. However, the plants quickly put out tons of shoots so this story has a happy ending. |

Are you sure the aphids died or did they just walk away in disgust after their food source died. If you spray white oil on roses at a rate high enough to kill aphids (at least here in Qld) it will often result in foliage burn. Buy a little bottle of Confidor (very safe spray) and use that on your aphids next time. It's totally effective. I'll eat my hat if you don't agree after trying it yourself. Happy Spring blooming greencroc Thrip |

Well that would explain why some of the leaves on a couple of my roses have the shrivelled look. I did the same-- saw the thrips/aphids and sprayed generously with white oil.Aerosol on all of them. Some leaves have curled up. Would this be the cause? Thanks Michelle |

Hi Michelle It's a high probability. White oil was improved on about ten years ago with products like Pest Oil, D.C Tron etc. etc coming on to the market. The new products have a sunburn protection agent in them etc etc and I can't really remember it all now but suffice to say they are much improved on the original white oil in terms of phytotoxicity (leaf burn etc). You need to be carefull when using these oils on roses because the concentrations required to kill various insects vary greatly and secondly even the minimum recommended concentrations will burn roses to some degree,in Qld. We use oils under greenhouse conditions where U.V light is excluded and even here at very low concentrations we can get minor burning around the leaf margins. Thrip |

On further thought;I have a rose "Perfect Moment" which seems to have taken a battering. Some of its leaves have curled up and I realize now that this happened after the white oil spray. And this has happened before after a spray but I havent connected it.This particular rose must hate white oil. I have noted from the forums here that Fresia hates Triforine so I avoid that on that plant. Do you have this experience? Thanks Michelle |

Hi Michelle Haven't grown freisa for ten years and haven't used triforine an awfull lot either but I wouldn't doubt it. It's always a good idea to check for spray damage after every application made (over the following few days) regardless of what is being sprayed. The observations will help you to improve your results over the following seasons.Foliage burns reduce vigour and create sites for secondary infections to develop( eg botrytis) so avoid them as best you can. Most sprays believe it or not are capable of causing problems in this area but some are far worse than others. The phytotoxic effects of sprays varies greatly with other factors such as weather, other spray residues present etc, etc.Having said all that, most of the sprays registered for use on garden roses (bar oils and possibly soaps) won't get you into too much trouble for the best part. If anybody out there thinks differently, let us know before we find out the hard way. Thrip |
