Standard roses

| Help! My husband has finally agreed to plant a row of standard roses in our back yard (5 each side of the garden path). I am thinking something in the creamy tones but have no idea what would work best. I'm not all that keen on 'iceberg' - it opens out too freely for my tastes. Love the David Austin Roses but haven't come across a creamy one yet. I was thinking of maybe Fabulous, Our Vanilla or Edelweiss. Does anyone have any comments/suggestions on these roses or any others that would work? |

| French Lace might be nice as a standard if you can get it. I can hardly believe I saw Oklahoma as a standard yesterday. You'd have to be a giraffe to smell the roses! |

There is a parchment coloured rose by David Austin called Troilus. You might need to contact a specialist David Austin grower to obtain it. You could try Gardenarium in SA, who don't seem to have a web site, but their ph no is 08 8723 1325. It's worth remembering that a lot of DA yellow roses fade to cream anyway. |

| I've got Edelweiss and that keeps a compact shape and the blooms are creamy-white, sometimes with a tinge of apricot. You need to pay attention to the shape of the rose you're thinking of using as a standard as well as colour. It often amazes me some of the roses that are chosen for standards when you see the eventual shape they'll become. Looking at the list in Ross Roses catalogue (I find them reliable with their choice) they list the following for a small stem rose...(cream roses) Edelweiss, French Lace, Gruss an Aachen. Large stem rose....(no cream listed) Fidelio (red), Gold Bunny, Iceberg - etc. Von. |

| I have Troilus as a bush in the ground and it's pretty tall, though I don't prune it heavily. It'd have to be pushing 6 feet. A nice flower and a pretty creamy colour, but one with that "myrrh" type scent (to my and my family's noses yuk). What height to the graft are you thinking?..or will that depend on how high the chosen variety gets? |

| I have Troilus as a bush, and I agree I don't think it would be suitable as a standard. It's a gorgeous rose though. I also grow Eidelweiss and Gruss an Aachen as standards and they flower beautifully and stay nice and compact. Eidelweiss stays cream, G a Aachen can be pink at times. Both lovely roses. |

| Thanks heaps for the advice. I'll have a look at the Ross Roses website and see if I can still get either Edelweiss, French Lace or Gruss an Aachen (I've left it a bit late I fear). Those 3 sound fabulous. I did want something taller than the usual 90cm standards because it is a huge backyard and I really wanted it to stand out when looking at it from our back windows/door. So, I'll see how I go. Thanks again for all the info! |

| Elina might be worth a look too. It is one of the most reliable roses I've grown, and produces huge cream flowers, and lots of them. Very disease resistant in my area (Newcastle NSW) - not affected by black spot etc. I have not seen how well it does as a standard, but as a bush it produces lots of dense, lush foliage. It does get medium to large in size but you've said that's what you're looking for. Don't be discouraged if it takes a little while to start blooming - once it does, you won't look back. |

Elina would be to huge as a standard. Gruss an Aachen would be a fabulous choice. Vivienne |

Have you considered New Dawn? I hear this a wonderful rose Just a suggestion. I also have Gruss an Aachen as a standard. It is a new plant for me(See other thread) and it would be great. The bloom is a sensation Michelle |

New Dawn as a standard? I think it may be just a tad too big. Gruss an Aachen, a lovely rose, would be my choice. Cheers Mel |

| I think Seduction would be a winner - very romantic and lots of blooms. It depends on what colors you like. Cheers, Brissy |

Princess of Wales? Thrip P.S I'm an Iceberg hater too! PPS Champagner has a well earned reputation as a BS magnet. |
