Rose in American Beauty movie

Would anyone know what variety of rose was used in the film American Beauty? It is such an intense shade of red, really classic and alluring. The bush is shown at the start when the wife is picking flowers.

Thanks if anybody can identify it!

Corey

Sorry can't identify, but ou'd want to be careful buying on the strength of the colour in the movie, they digitally alter the colour on movies with computers now. They probably generated a lot of the rose and petal images with computer too.. They cover these techniques in the special features on the Lord of the Rings CD. That beautiful lush green of Hobbiton and the Shire is digitally imposed. The original shots are very different indeed. Amazing what they can do.

I thought the rose was called American Beauty...

Yes the rose itself is named American Beauty (see www.imdb.com). But Snodge is right - don't trust what you see on film. They may have recoloured the picture or turned up the colour intensity to make it seem brighter.

Some of the pictures I found on the Internet look positively pink ...

Kardinal is a great red rose which might suit you - a very classic, pure red colour.

I was just looking the other day to how they made Madonna's face look alot better , so you can imagine what a easy job it would be to enhance a rose. I must say the rose called Oklahoma HT would come a close second and this is in "real life" too.

Thanks for your replies.

I looked around on Google Images and there was one rose described as a pure red rose, Veterans' Honor, or City of Newcastle to us. But it was released in 2000, and American Beauty was made in 1999. Could it perhaps be Olympiad?

I have City of Newcastle growing in my yard - 2 in fact, because it is one of my favourites. It is a very pure red, with a tight bud that opens quite slowly and is therefore great in the vase. My only criticism is that the fragrance is only slight. But I live in Newcastle, so I simply have to have it!
