It still happens every year...........

Every year I see those completely dead roses in those chain stores and I wonder what the heck people must think. The average novice is not to know and would probably blame themselves that the damn plant never grew since planting it and there we have more peolple throwing roses in the `to hard basket`. I took my son out today on his birthday at Eastland (Ringwood Victoria) and walked through big W and I would say that at least half their standards and bushes were as dead as dead gets and on full display. Then a stroll past the nursery section in Target was not much better with their stock.
Im sorry but I just dont get it. They all claim to have trained horticulturists in those nursery sections - well they better get re-trained or a new job.
Does this happen everywhere or was I in the wrong place at the wrong time?

| Hi Pete ,I reckon it happens most places, I used to work at a place that says they wont be beaten on price and I know they have trained horticulturists, and the majority of their roses still look crap, last season they didnt have bagged roses at all only potted, really really small ones ,but at large prices, this time when I have been shopping havent seen any at all there yet, but I got some great roses a couple of years ago at a well know nursery in the yarra valley and they have never looked back , so I will be going back there soon, target up here dont even have a nursery any more.cheers |

| Its amazing really. People still buy them though. We saw people still sifting through them trying to pick out some live ones but anything that was green had severve hydration problems and were shrivling up. Anyway, it will only bite them back. You cant have your finger in all the pies I say.............. Pete |

Hello, I've heard from a reputable source that the bare rooted roses that can be bought from the large chain stores undergo some pretty brutal treatment before they arrive at the stores. Apparently, in order to get them into the stores early in Winter they spray the roses with defoliant so they can speed up the bagging process! The plants don't appreciate this very much, as you can imagine. Also, in the stores,if the bags are allowed to dry out even once (and this happens!)while in volatile bare rooted stage then it affects the plant's development quite badly - not only then, but later on when you've got it home. Yes, I too have been stung by the bare rooted roses in the department stores and many a time, after a couple of years in the ground and virtually no growth have 'given them to God' in favour of another healthier rose. You'd think I should have learnt by now, but sometimes I'm still tempted! Gosh, talk about addicted! Cheryl |

| The stuff they use to defoliate the roses is bitter salts. Its not a chemical but it burns all the leaves of. It then throws them into a mini dormant stage but if the day temp is still warm (and Adelaide has milder weather April) then the plant is still active and starts to re-shoot in the bag and thats why after 6-8 weeks they are dried up and die because the plant is drawing every bit of moister it can get from within the bag and when there is no more moister, it starts to draw on itself. The problem is, most people are not ready in May but they all try to get them on the shelves for Mothers day (first Sunday in May) and its just to early. I know we have had a cold Autumn this year but generally I have had blooms in May, and thats Victoria. Pete |

| I went to my local hardware the other day. They had a wheel barrow full of roses - all dead as the proverbial dodo. The stems were even shrivelling. I have to admit though, that I have seen some not much better at the local nursery. |

Well, that would explain why I have had a lot of trouble reviving a couple that I have bought. If they have been sprayed with defoliant and then their system gets out of whack,no wonder they are hard to grow! Thanks Pete Michelle |

Hello, I have read the exact posting on every forum; they even list the same stores! It is quite amusing, really, to read this on the Oz site while "dropping in" for my first visit. I will have to mention this next time the subject is raised. Aurelia in South Carolina, USA |

| What about the weird yellow sad leaves trying to grow. As seen at Kmart Brunswick and Doncaster in Victoria! |

That always happens in stores were there are fluro lights. They get left in bags for to long and the UV from the lights being on for at least 20 hrs a day gives them just enough UV to start throwing out pathetic shoots. Pete |
