| The best rose in my garden is a Kordes floribunda called Golden Holstien. I've grown it for 3 years and, despite being almost smothered by perennials, it has never suffered from black spot. I can't say the same for any other rose. The climate here is cool(ish), and the soil is sandy. |

Thanks Wattleblossom for your comment on the Kordes rose. By the way this is the real thrip speaking here, not thrips wife Anne.I have just arrived home to find Anne has been using my user name/page/thingy to chat with others on the forum. To avoid confusion with other users,ie. as to whom they are talking to, we will set up a page of her own with her own user name.So look out for another pest on the forum. |

I have Hanza Park .It is hardy, disease free and a great rose to have.It is very resistant to BS and the fungal stuff. I have other Kordes roses and they are the same. Michelle |

Thanks Michelle. Our expectations are rising. Mr Thrip |

| Dear Mr and Mrs Thrip (good job you didn't call yourself spider mite!) Kordes makes a few lines of rose. The ones you mention are termed shrub roses mainly because they have no real class to fall into. The Kordes affair with this kind of rose has waned in the last 10 years or so, and nowadays their main focus is varieties for commercial cut flowers. But over the years they've had all kinds of classics from Iceberg to Extase. It's hard to generalise about a breeder as widespread as Kordes, but to me their brand reputation is healthy and disease resistant breeds. The downside - and there is always one - is less of a focus on fragrance and flower form, although there are several stunning exceptions to this (Parole for example). |

| I planted Gerber Engel last year, and loved it so much I went and bought 2 more this year. The leaves are glossy and healthy, and the lovely single yellow blooms just keep coming. Rosendorf Sparrieshoop also looks pomising, but hasn't been growing long enough here to comment. I have just received Hanza Park from Treloars, along with ground covers Heidesommer and Pincushion. Will let you know how they do. |

Golden Holstein is a brilliant rose and competes favourably with any rose from any breeder. Extremely disease resistant and holds it's blooms for ages. Ria |

Rosendorf Sparrieshoop is a sensational rose, fantastic performer, healthy, tough, I'd love a hedge of it. In fact that's why I bought this one, I saw it on a farm I was visiting as a hedge, and admired it so, I nearly ran over their verandah! |

That's a good point Brenton but I don't have an answer for you just yet. We're mainly about producing potted roses. The finished product must have flower and bud.If some or all of these varieties are as disease tolerant as is claimed and "if" they can be flowered in pots (smaller the better)than I've no doubt they will sell well.It may take a couple of seasons or more to evaluate these roses for ourselves. My wife started this thread because we just never seem to bump into these roses up/over here.So..... we've never grown them and nobody we know has grown them.If anybody else has anything to say on this subject, please do.I don't care wether its positive or negative. Incidently we have received and planted these roses and they have begun growing strongly.I may get around to posting some digital photos some time soon. |

| Marie-Luise Marjan performs quite well for me and my daughter has planted several of these. It grows upright and produces plenty of blooms throughout the season. I find it to be better than Sebastian Kneipp, though I do rather like SK's bloom. SK has grown more like a small climber and is very thorny. I've found the Kordes roses do rather well in S.A. e.g., Golden Holstein, Caramella, Heieschnee, Red Pixie, Bella Rosa, Iceberg,Valencia, Fresh Cream. I love the Blue Bijou, but the blooms don't last very long. Athena, on the other hand stay on the bush or in the vase are AGES. |

| i can give you the answer and save a couple of seasons!!!...you can keep 'em small with chemicals if you have to( ie: if your selling to chains and have to meet their specs).best of luck |

| Hi Thrip rosies, In Brisbane I am growing Hanza Park and Angela. They are both going really well no diseases and not a problem with our heat. Good luck and where are you in SE Qld????? I love buying roses : ) Have you seen on one of the posts that we are having a catch up at New Farm Park on the 4th Sept - come along and bring some of these potted roses to sell - We all have different tastes and sounds like you have a good range. Just a suggestion. Cheers, Brissy |

| I've just been pruning my Sebastian Kneipp and discovered that he's been taking root wherever he touches earth - and he's a BIG thorny devil who sends out LONG canes, talk about the triffids! Von. |

Thankyou everyone who has replied. We're still waiting to see what we think of the MS's.So far they are obviously at the top end for vigour.Hanza Park for example is almost a metre high. Brenton,I just couldn't sell my roses or any plant for that matter to the chains.I know what happens to 50% of them.I spent a couple of years throwing plants into rubbish bins for Kmart.Thats probably why they like growth regulators sprayed on their plants. They take up less space in bins and rubbish trucks which reduces their dumping costs. Thrip What are growth regulators? What do they do to the plants? Thanks Michelle |
RE: Kordes Roses ,Growing Modern Shrubs ?
| | |
Hi again Michelle Growth regulators are substances which cause responses in plants similar to what hormones cause. These chemicals are widely used in agriculture to control the growth of crops. For example paclobutrazol can be used to reduce stretching in potted plants(they become shorter, dumpier etc easier to transport, can fit more on nursery growing areas and on retailers shelves etc)The same chemicals are used to restrict the size of fruit trees in orchards(easier to pick etc) and on the wheat crops grown to make our bread (ie the benefit being that the shorter crop requires less soil moisture to produce the equivalant yield). There are many other GR's used in different crop situations which cause various different responses which benefit growers etc. Thrip |
