moving roses

Hi,
I haven't posted for a long time, but thought I might need the help of some experts out there.
We are going to be doing some renovating soon, and I will need to move about 40 roses. They are all established roses and I was wondering if I could put them into large pots, or some sort of 'growing bag'? Has anybody had success with moving garden roses into pots? I really don't want to send them to heaven just yet. I have some roses doing fine in pots, but they have always been in them.
Cheers,
Myrna

RE: moving roses

Yes I have and in the heat of a Queensland Summer and imagine my surprise to find buds coming on one two weeks ago when I thought it nearly dead.

Yes go for it you may have to prune the roots down a bit but do it soon they will be fine try for the biggest pot or bag you can manage though, saying that I dug up 15 of mine last month to move to a new bed and all the soil fell off them in the process so they were bare rooted roses after all that..They will be fine mine have new shoots on them already Roses are very forgiving you know.. Good luck with the potting up...Cheers...MM.

Thanks for your thoughts MM. I thought it might be OK, particularly since it is winter and things are fairly dormant here at the moment. I haven't actually pruned yet, so thought I might do so and pot them up at the same time.
Cheers.

RE: moving roses

Hi Myrna,
I moved 12 roses at the weekend seeing as we had an extra day. Like Misty, all the dirt fell off, but I just planted them as bare rooted. No one looks dead yet, so I guess it didn't do any harm. I pruned at the same time, lost loads of blooms and buds, but hey, just wait until Spring! Good luck with it.
Regards
Julia
