Here it is Rose season again and I am wondering where all the wonderful Rose people are.

I enjoy reading all the ideas and looking at the beautiful pictures that have been sent in over the years gone by.

Hi Marion. Just busy I guess, it's that time of the year. And with the days getting shorter, there is just so much that needs to be crammed into the daylight hours. Here, because we have already had some rain, I have been outside at every opportunity planning, digging and planting. And trying to wage war on that blasted sorrel.
When winter sets in proper, everyone will return to their snugs, and their keyboards ...
Cheers ... Rosalie.

RE: where is everyone ???

I agree. There seems to be a lot less happening on both the rose gallery and this forum.
Maybe people are sick of roses now and looking forward to autumn and the new plants/growth that will come.
When I post on the gallery ,Im lucky to get 1/2 replies.MM always replies but often shes the only one who seems interested.
Its discouraging when the responses are not forthcoming.
cheers

RE: where is everyone ???

I have put in my orders for roses. Ground covers from treloars, plus a few of their new introductions, including The Endeavour. I think I ordered 2 "Suntan" - their little apricot miniature rose, to put in pots on the deck. Climbers from Reliable Roses. Also Mme Gregoire Staechelin and Zepherine Drouhin from Spring Park, and I will probably get a Red Pierre from them if I can decide where I want one.
I have 1 Zeph and 1 Clbg Angel Face on the back Pergola, along with 2 honeysuckle. The honeysuckles are going as is the Angel face, which is just too morbidly sad to keep. Not at all Angelic. So the 2 Mme GS and the extra ZD will go there.
The climbers from RR include Paul Transon, and Clair Martin, and will go along the new fence we have put up to exclude the doggies from the winter swamp area down the back. A new fence was cheaper than a complete new remake of the effluent system, which was only put in 4 years ago, and besides that area stays nice and green all through summer, so is good fire proofing.
Ok - starting to ramble on here. What have others bought - either by design, or by accident at the early Big W and K-mart rose sales. Personally I'm avoiding those this year.
Cheers, Jan

RE: where is everyone ???

I have only bought Renae seeing it cost under $7 at Big W if it dies too bad as we lose the right to use a hand held rose in three week buckets only so I did not want to chance a order if I canot manage to water them.

I am thinking of turfing out Apricot Nectar and Gold Bunny though I may have a go at grafting sea foam on those standards stems only trouble is they are 3ft and could be too short what do you think.

Jan your Garden sounds delightful as always good luck with the new ones.

Yes Michelle it is disapointing maybe people just cannot be bothered who knows, like you I dont post much now either especially on the Gallery but I do find that lots who post pics do not answer other posts, so I am doing the same and only reply to those that reply to mine now and maybe those others will get the message Cheers..MM.

 o
RE: where is everyone ???

Well sparaxis your order sounds wonderful.I hope that you have success with your planting. The Endeavour looks wonderful....its on my ever- increasing list!

MM it must be very tough with the bucket watering,
I think have a go at grafting...you are going to throw them out anyway and who knows..you may end up with a lovely standard!
Did you see my pic of First Prize on the gallery forum?
and yes ,I agree. If people post a pic and expect responses they should take the trouble to respond to others who post photos.
cheers

RE: where is everyone ???

Hi,
I have 3 Renea on a wire fence, put in last winter. They have grown like crazy and have not stopped blooming all year.

I have ordered so far;
10 Europeanea to go along side either side of a stair way.
10 Golden Holsteins to go along a fence where I already have 4 climbing Sympathies.
20 assorted HT and FB for my cutting garden, mostly older types I am familiar with.

I am also getting ready to order 4 shrub type roses and a couple of climbers that Lozza has recommended.

Having fallen in love with the Red Pierre, I have redesigned things a little, will move a couple of roses and add an arbour as an entrance to my cutting garden and plant him there. Will have to wait for July to do this.

I have finished digging my holes and adding compost, so am ready for the roses when they come. This past week I have been adding a grass pathway, using plugs, between 2 long rows of roses.

I have a question.
I inherited a rose from a friend who could not remember what it was called. It has soft yellowish apricot flowers about 2" across old fashion looking (like an Austin), usually in small clusters. Growth is shrub like, to about 3 feet tall and around and is not weedy. It put on all this growth and bloom in spring and then has not bloomed again since nor has it grown at all. I thought it would go again this autumn but it has not. I dead headed only, feed/watered with all the other roses and it appears in good health.
Does this sound normal? Any ideas on how it should be pruned or perhaps should not be pruned? I am going to leave it where it is another year, but then will move it further out if it does not do more next year.
Deb

RE: where is everyone ???

Hi Deb I hope my Renae grows as good as yours I am growing my one as a pillar dont laugh but I planted it up against a PVC pipe no chemicals on PVC with wire netting around it looks like a chimney sitting in a garden bed. I love the deep yellow colour of Golden Holsteins but dont own one. I have the same problem with one of my Crepuscule's it bloomed last Spring then forgot about it these past nine months..I have let it be and will see whats happens this Spring as the one next to it has grown ok...MM.

RE: where is everyone ???

MM,
I think that will work really well with Renea. It is very easy to train and no thorns. Mine is on wire and it is easy to keep where it belongs.

I recently got a lot of 8 foot tall log poles. I was considering sticking them straight up in the ground and growing roses up them, might look similar to what you are doing? Was not sure how it would look, do you have a picture of what you think yours will look like?

I also saw some old rusty garden gates, about 6 feet tall...was thinking of hanging them between two of the poles like a trellis and growing a rose up it. Maybe several in a row, to make sort of a wall of roses? Or perhaps a three sided box, with a bench inside? So many ideas...LOL

What lovely gardens you must all have.
Thanks for the descriptions.

I got caught in the Big W rose section the day they were unpacking them, went in to buy some padlocks for our ports for the big trip and came out with 3 roses instead.
I bought a lovely New Dawn and hope it and the Graham Thomas and Leander like our climate up here, which can be a mite unforgiving to things that don't like it.

Sometimes I don't answer questions as I don't really know the answer but do enjoy reading the results from those who do answer, that is how we learn I guess.

Just think, this time next Saturday, at 5.45 a.m. our plane will have landed at Heathrow and we will be doing the "get out of there thing" and going to the B&B we are staying at and heading for the Chelsea flower show, 10 minutes walk away.

I must contact Lozza and order the Lamargue I want, to be here when I come back.

RE: where is everyone ???

Deb your pole idea would be easier to work on than my PVC pipe as you can nail into wood where it will probably crack the PVC if I drill into it that's why I have it surrounded by wire, another friend told me that two poles with chain across the tops growing climbers or ramblers that way another idea for a arch. On the hard rubbish collection day recently we got three huge rolls of chicken wire and a fold down bed frame which would be like your gates so that idea of a trellis sound good. I will post a pic of Renae later if it grows ok.

Marion do have a wonderful trip, got plenty of memory cards for that camera and I will for one be looking forward to seeing those pics on the Gallery and I WILL reply to them, Marion I don't think it is the questions so much that we mind not getting a answer too, its the time and effort put into cropping resizing uploading the photo's and no one answers. I never answer posts when I don't know either but I often reply saying I don't know and wish them luck that's better than seeing a post sit up on top with no reply for many weeks. Chelsea should be fantastic just hope you are not too tired to enjoy it...

Safe journey Marion for you and Henry;
And looking forward to hearing all about it when you come back... Cheers..MM.

RE: where is everyone ???

peplill..I have seen the pillar roses growing up poles and they look great, when your orders come in and they are all planted it should be a sight to see.
All your gardens sound wonderful.

Ashmeri...are you going to Chelsea? Oh....how wonderful.I hope you have a really fantastic time and it would be great if you could post some pics!
Going to Chelsea is on my wishlist...I doubt that I will ever get there, who knows, we may win Tatts and over I go.:))
cheers

RE: where is everyone ???

I'm a little envious. I had a holiday once (January 1976) to Tasmania. I well remember every day of it. Every year since, when I have decided to go away, one of my employees has decided on the exact same weeks and I have had to cancel. Hope the business sells soon so I can go away too.
Regards
Julia

I would like to join in and mention what I've bought and ordered so far this year. It has only been 6 months since we moved into our country place and am not sure how the roses are going to stand up to the wallabies and possums. Precautions will be taken.

Bought 2 Double Delights at Big W and have ordered a Peter Frankenfeld... these are to go in my 'bright' bed.

Also ordered a Spirit of Peace and 2 Amoretto which will join Elena in my 'pale'bed.

I already have a Pierre de Ronsard in a pot that is to go against a wall and like some others on the forum I have also ordered a Red Pierre. Wonder if Treloars will run out of R.P. this year?

I expect someone will know approx when do Treloars send their roses? I'm abit worried because we are going away for most of July and would like to have everything in the ground by then.

 o
RE: where is everyone ???

I think those all sound very delightfull sorry cant help with Treloars I have never bought from them, last season all mine came from Magic Garden Roses in Vic and they asked ME when I wanted them sent, so maybe you could tell them when you want yours it wont hurt..

I am in the middle of transplanting again yesterday I dug up my Gold Bunny and La Sevillana and put it in the new Garden bed and I am now removing and replanting the ground cover roses Red bassino has just gone in and and sea foam is sitting on the shovel (only came in for a drink of water) still got to do Pink bassino and My rosy carpet,

Tomorrow the ones in the pots are going into the ground and I am transplanting all the mini ones.....Cheers..MM.

 o
RE: where is everyone ???

Wow MM that sounds great, what a lovely day you much have had! I have to wait a bit longer, mine are still all in bloom.
I started some cuttings today off of some of my ground cover roses today, have no idea if they will take but want to give it a try.

Can someone tell me how to post a picture. I have read the instructions but still am confused.

Deb

 o
RE: where is everyone ???

Hi Deb I have sent you a e-mail with instructions.

Good luck with your cuttings,

Mine are still in bloom too but a girls gota do what a girls gota do and I wont wait for anything us Aries are like that this is the second time I have transplanted the two standards in 10 days. You see I make the new rose bed even longer so dug them up again and moved them further apart that way I have room for those four ground covers ones as they need so much room but I may have to remove more of the lawn so I can fit the mini's in. I am scratched to pieces though I often wonder why the most beautiful flowers have thorns it does not deter the caterpillars so what purpose do they serve..Cheers...MM.

 o
RE: where is everyone ???

Well people, it looks like rose bushes are to us , like shoes are to Imelda Marcos.
I wasn't going to buy any roses this year ... hmmph choke splutter, cough ... as I wanted to concentrate on my deciduous tree purchases this winter.
So far I have added :
Graham Thomas* x 3 , Hero* x 2 , Wenlock* x 2 , Orthello* , The Countryman* , Troilus* , The Friar , Jude The Obscure , Teasing Georgia , Eglantyne , Cymbeline , Claire Rose* .
Clmb. Wedding Day* , Lilli Marlene , Sutters Gold ,
Buff Beauty*
Jessika* , Diamond Jubilee , Anne Marie Treschlin* , Cream Delight x 2 , Perfume Delight* , Angel Face* x 2 , Sonia , Royal Dane* , Rae Dungan , Peace* , Sweet Sonata* , Fragrant Delight* , Lady Meilland , Adolf Horstmann* , Largerfeld , Regensburg , Candystripe , Masquerade and a H.T called Cocktail, (as opposed to the single red climber by the same name). * means I already have 1 or more of that variety in the garden.
I like to buy what I can as bare rooted bushes, when they come into the shops, and then the really special choices I will splurge out the extra $ to buy them potted here if I can find them or order them from the specialist mail order nurseries.
Who needs heroin or speed when you can have roses for an addiction ???
Cheers Rosalie

 o
RE: where is everyone ???

Rosalie, you leave me breathless! How big is your garden? I have ordered almost as many, but not on impulse - the places are ready to receive them! I am avoiding bigW and Kmart this year, trying not to be seduced. Lat year my garden had room for impulse buys but this year i don't have the room or the time.
You will surely have a wonderful display!

 o
RE: where is everyone ???

Rosalie:: We will be looking forward to many pics of these roses and their beautiful display.
Like you I have heaps of room for more, but sadly we don't have the water.
Or should I say the strength to carry all those buckets of water to keep them alive.
Cheers..MM

RE: where is everyone ???

I have 7 roses ordered from Treloars - by the way, they sent me a confirmation saying I would get mine at the end of June. I don't know if all orders will come then, but that is when I am expecting my order. I am going to grow a hedge (sort of) along my fence line to neaten my place a little. I live on an acreage and my neighbours tend to not do a lot with their house yards. Could you please advise me what roses would look best as a hedge sort-of-thing? I was thinking of some of the David Austins. I stand to be corrected if they would make a good row for the purpose or not. I have approximately an acre under gardens. I am also going to be doing a lot of rose moving in the next few weeks - Here's a laugh for you all - I didn't know that roses grow to different heights, hence I have Queen Elizabeth in front of Gold Bunny and Stainless Steel in front of Julia's rose which in turn is in front of Blueberry Hill, etc. (I DO know now that roses grow to different heights).
Cheers
Julia

RE: where is everyone ???

All your eargely awaited orders sound wonderful.

Rosalie.... My goodness...I would be in rose heaven when they all bloom.Very nice selection there.

juliaf..... I have heard that DAs Golden Celebration is good for a hedging rose.Im not sure where I heard that so I could be wrong.

It seems I not alone..I havent bought any new ones for this season because I have no room.:((
Once we clear an area at the front ,I will have some more space but I have roses in containers all ready to go in there:)

MM.....I have finally seen the Parade roses I have been looking for for ages after you posted about them. They are a nice rose...I saw them in Kmart Garden centre.
My roses are so much in need of a prune...I cant wait to get in there and tidy them up.
I have some bulbs shooting already..I am really excited to see how they turn out.
cheers
Michelle

 o
RE: where is everyone ???

Hi Michelle I am in the middle of transplanting my little parade roses. Only four to go now will finish them tomorrow, as I am now going to pull my computer apart and put another HDD in it.

YIPPEE I will be very glad when it is finished as I am so weary the soil is that hard and compacted and I have to dig a litle bit then carry buckets of water to put in the holes when it soaks in I dig the soft soil out I put more water in then I dig more out and do it all over again and why all because I planted Renae and thought it would look better if it had more colour around it so another 16 roses I have moved this week.

I think I am getting too old for this I pictured myself as a lady of leisure with a flower basket in my hand full of beautiful blooms and someone else would do all the hard work *Dreams * It should look good in the late Spring though....Cheers..MM

 o
RE: where is everyone ???

Julia, there is "China" rose, more specifically Rosa chinensis Mutabilis that makes a fantastic hedge. If you are in a part of the country that has fairly mild winters, it will flower nearly all year round. It needs very little serious pruning and has very few thorns. It strikes pretty readily from cuttings and grows well on its own roots, so if you bought a couple of plants, you could soon build up quite a stock for hedging with out a huge cash outlay; especially useful if you wish to cover a long fence line.
Just a thought, I sort of have a similar idea for our front fence line. Rosalie
