I tooke them back to Big W

Thank you all for your advice on the damaged Roses.
Went for the 50 klm trip back to Big W and they willingly gave me an exchange for the roses.
I spent quite a time at the rose section and when I found what I wanted I got my little scissors and cut the tye at the top and opened the packs to check the stem below the saw dust, did it to 3 before I got to a good one.I guess there must have been a very bad batch sent to Rockhampton as the girl said she had a few returned for the same reason.
I felt like putting up a sign telling people to do what I did as there were a lot of roses going out of the checkouts.
If I ever buy roses again where would I go for healthy plants ?

Marion, who has 6 now.

Marion buy from a rose breeder - there are several excellent ones - Hedgerow in NSW or Reliable Roses in Vic (Lozza has a passing connection with the latter so look at his home page) are two - you can order and they will be mailed to you. Far better way to buy. I now resist the urge to buy at supermarkets for the reason you described. From the breeders, you can be assured of a healthy rose and I am sure if it is not, they would mail to you again - and you will not have to drive 50 km. Ordering can still be done for deliveries by mail in June- August.

Hi Marion, be warned if you go to a rose breeder the roses will breed and you will end up having around 50 before you know it .....:)I would recommend Reliable Roses and also go local to our Queensland rose grower - Trewallyn nursery 0741597313.

Cheers,

Brissy

Marion-I am glad you got some decent roses in exchange.
I occasionally buy roses from chain stores and have never had a problem.
I think you were really unlucky this time-but I think you will find that they won't be using that supplier again.
To me it looked like the roses had been yanked out of the ground by some gripping mechanical machinery and the gripper is what caused the damage-i can think of nothing else that would cause the damage we saw on your roses.
So c'mon-fess up...what babies did you bring home?????
We need names. :)
regards
sandie

HELLO EVERYONE, THANK YOU FOR YOR WONDERFUL ADVISE TO A NEWBIE.
i HAVE SOME (darn capslock, I keep hitting it when i don't look) of the roses I remember my Mother always having and enjoying.
Peace, the first one she bought in Melbourne when they first came out and had one in every home we had.
Double Delight, which was one of the damaged ones.
Imp, which is a lovely little thing and was one of the damaged ones.
Cecille Brunner, always had one of these too.

The mext 2 are
Gold Bunny because I saw lovely ones when we were in Trafalgar last year.

and you all know how I fell in love with Bonica.

Hopefully they will all be trouble free and like where I have put them, they will get the morning sun till about 1'30 and will miss the hard hot sun in the afternoon.
Do you think that will be O.K.

Marion

Hi Marion,
Good on you and well done. Mind you, I had NO idea that you had to travel so far to return them!!
Love your choice of roses. My mother-in-law had a Cecille Brunner. It was NEVER watered, fertilised or pruned and it flowered it's little heart out every year. What a tough and forgiving little rose! It reminded me that I promised myself one years ago. I wonder if I should risk popping down to Big W. LOL. Mmmmm...maybe tomorrow...? At least it's only 10 minutes down the road.
Cheers,
Dee.

Dee, be careful to get Cecile Brunner, and not Spray Cecile Brunner.

RE: I tooke them back to Big W

Hi Lozza,
Excuse my ignorance, but what is "Spray Cecile Brunner"?
Cheers,
Dee.

Spray Cecile Brunner is an 8' x 6' shrub, a sport of Cecile Brunner. It is easily identifiable with its elongated serrated sepals, and large candelabra sprays of puny blooms with little or no fragrance and no button eye so prominent with Cecile Brunner, which is a smallish bush to about 3'.

Thanks Lozza, I'll know to look out for that now. I'd never heard of it before and could have made a sorry mistake.
Cheers,
Dee.

Lozza

I have never considered Cecile Brunner as my experience has been 5 feet high and wide unruly shrubs in front gardens of houses in Sydney with little to no perfume and not very spectacular little pink buds which I have always thought were a bit boring .... maybe I have been looking at spray CB as these bushes are not 3 feet high. The button eye you speak of and show in the picture is something I have never seen.

Maybe I should order a real CB?

Are we thinking of Bloomfield Abundance when speaking of the Spray Cecile Brunner? Huge shrub with leafy sepals.

Sorry Pam, we're not. Varmi, Cecile Brunner, Spray Cecile Brunner (a sport of Cecile Brunner), and Bloomfield Abundance are distinct cultivars. The name Bloomfield Abundance was erroneously attached to Spray Cecile Brunner some time ago, but we are now trying to expunge the myth. Check the link below.

Thanks for that Lozza, I'm all for getting the truth out...I note too that some nurseries could make a little more effort in regard to the R. laevigata mix up with R. bracteata, among others. So do we have Cecile Brunner, the climbing Cecile Brunner and the Spray Cecile Brunner. I also have the white Cecile Brunner. Am I correct? I'm all for educating the average gardener...many couldn't care less though ;)

Hmm, sounds like I've got spray cecile brunner if the elongated sepals is the test for that rather than bloomfield abundance.

So, how does one identify the real Bloomfield abundance, can't say I could detect too much detail from the piccies.

From my information, Bloomfield Abundance might have passed on. Doubtless there is a plant in the States. I doubt it was ever imported here.

Varmi, yes you are correct. I don't have the climber myself. As I have said elsewhere, buds of the climber reverted to bush. Perhaps I was not careful enough, or couldn't find a climbing cane from which to get the buds. There should be more of the White grown. And don't forget Perle d'Or, aka Yellow Cecile Brunner. No relation really, other than being a China. Has the curious habit of splitting its petals as they age. Rarely looks like this.
